Butz Choquin Rolando Negoita Sandblast 9mm Filter

In 2004, organized Butz-Choquin an international contest of pipe design, together with the celebrated American magazine pipes and tobacco. More then 80 artisans from both sides of the Atlantic took up the challenge and submitted their creations. The magazine selected the 10 finalists and then it was up to the Butz-Choquin team to choose the winning pipe. It was an easy decision: Rolando Negoita´s model was definitely the most balanced as well as the most original one.

"This well proportioned pipe combines sensuous curves and daringly modern lines. Obviously at first one´s eye is caught by the striking execution of the stem and shank. Next, as it slides along the bowl, the eye discovers the promise of a natural and pleasant hand feel. Though avant-garde at first site, Rolando Negoita´s design does not however betray the classicism of the traditional French pipe. Obviously this stylish and pure shape emerged from the drawing board of a highly experienced artisan or rather a talented artist."

Born in Romania, Rolando Negoita graduated from the Romanian Academy of Fine Art in Bucharest, and immigrated to United States in 1990, where he is currently teaching metalsmithing and design at the renowned Parsons School of Design in New York. In his workshop he designs fashion accessories and home furnishings, but also knives and pipes. Though he carved his first pipe in 1979, it was only in 2002 that he started to market his pipes under the name of Atelier Rolando. The success was immediate. Today collectors from all over the world are buying his products and he is considered as one of the most innovative contemporary pipe makers.
