Manufacturer Description:
Medium-bodied blend with a high proportion of Virginia, a pinch Burley and smoky Latakia.
Characterisation:
If you unseal the round tin of the English Mixture and open the paper rosette, you will see a mixture of primarily brown-tinted tobaccos. A good quantity of almost black fibers is evenly mixed in. The cutting width of the tobaccos is unusually wide for an English blend, while the scent is again classic. This is smoky, like an autumn fire, with a subtle sweetness reminiscent of prunes. The tobacco is neither too dry nor too moist and can be plugged directly from the tin.
Plugging:
The English Mixture's broader tobacco fibers make a larger pipe advisable, as does careful tamping. If you start loosely at the bottom and end with only gentle pressure, the tobacco gets room to develop. This achieves an even burning.
Light up:
Due to the good consistency of the English Mixture, the wide cut takes the flame away quickly. If you gently press the embers and light the fire evenly again, you should have no worries about it anymore.
Smoking properties:
The Latakia in the English Mixture is smoky, slightly earthy, with a very mild sweetness. Along with distinctly woody notes, this is awakens memories of campfires. Virginia and Burley are to be tasted in the foreground. The Burleys make you think of roasted nuts, the slightly sour Virginia of hay and grass. The resulting harmony is unusual for an English mix, in which the Latakia usually dominates. Blown out through the nose, you can feel it more clearly in the smoke. The creamy, smoky-sweet taste awakens - without using an aroma! - Associations with a mild Scotch whiskey. As long as you keep the Virginias in mind and aren't too greedy, the English Mixture smokes cool and dry. It also burns down slow and remarkably mild and hardly needs to be lit again. This is where the wider cut comes into play. The English Mixture is medium-bodied at best, gaining strength towards the end before dying off, leaving very little light, fine ash and hardly any moisture.
Redolency:
The Latakia is more clearly represented in the room note of the English Mixture than in the taste. Therefore, one should choose one's company wisely or smoke the tobacco outdoors, which does not detract from the taste.
Conclusion:
Virginia and Burley dominate the mixture. In the broad-grained cross-section as well as in taste. Nutty and sweet flavors accompany the smoky Latakia. This is milder than one is used to from English mixtures. The nicotine content is also rather low. These qualities will make the English Mixture appeal to a wide range of smokers. Easy to prepare and smoke, even beginners can enjoy it without being overwhelmed by the Latakia. In addition, the tobacco can be enjoyed all day long as it is not a heavy English blend that should be reserved for the later evening hours after a sumptuous meal. Last but not least, the English Mixture is ideal for anyone who would like to try an English tobacco but shy away from the classics because of their intense reputation.
