Manufacturer Description:
A darker, full-bodied, medium strong Flake-tobacco in English style for the experienced pipe smoker. The mixture is composed of equal parts of Virginia, Burley and Dark Fired Kentucky and offers a pure, spicy, straight taste of tobacco. Of course a good-natured burning down is ensured. The taste is strong, but nevertheless sweet.
Characterisation:
Within the rectangle tin lie the 3 inch long, 1 inch wide and about 0.4 inch thick slices neatly stringed and give off a strongly tobacco taste with nuances of a difficult to describe, sweetly aroma, similarly as a hint of apricot. The slices are dark brown with a few brighter streaks an less yellow parts. The fresh tobacco feels slightly, but not too dampish. The slices are rather compact and stable.
Plugging:
The Irish Flake is recommended to plug it with the “bend and folding method”: Once folded in length, than bent in the other direction and fluffily thrown into the bowl of the pipe of medium size, the optimum filling could be achieved with some practice. For a better light up some crumbs should be plugged as the last layer. Of course one could alternative rub one or two slices between the fingers and plug the tobacco as a mixture. In any case it’s recommended to plug this tobacco not too compressed, because it’ll swell during burning down noticeable.
Light up:
The tobacco streaks up heavily while lighting up. But dampened with the tamper and re-lighted with a second flame, it’ll glow constant.
Smoking properties:
Even with the first draws one could observe that the Irish Flake is rather strong! It develops a strong taste of tobacco, which is also attended by a fine, but definite fruity-aromatic flavour. The strength of Kentucky is definitely noticeable. The tobacco needs some attention to avoid overheating. Slowly and cool smoked it develops a pleasing taste, which is constant to the end. Thereby it glows down constant with less condensate to a balance of medium grey ash.
Redolency:
The redolence is dominated by the strong tobacco. As well a mellow fruity-sweet smell is noticeable, which makes this tobacco pleasing to the surrounding.
Conclusion:
The Irish Flake is a strong mixture of Virginia, Burley and Kentucky with a mellow fruity-sweet, apricot similarly smell and taste. Plugged bent and folded or rubbed it shows good smoking properties. But it needs some attention and should not be smoked too hot, because in this case it tends to bite on the tongue and will loose it’s taste. Smoked slowly and cool, it’ll glow down with less condensate to a balance of medium grey and dry ash. Due to the aromatic undertone the redolence is recommended for most societies – not too heavy and sweetly. Because of the strength the Irish Flake is more recommended for the experienced smoker and not suited for an empty stomach.
