MAGNA CARTA

THE MAGNA CARTA -
800 YEARS OF THE GREAT CHARTER

One of the most important documents in World history, The Magna Carta (The Great Charter) celebrates this year its 800th Anniversary (1215 – 2015) and constitutes one of the most fundamental building blocks of the British constitution.

Originally a peace treaty between the King and the rebel Barons, it was issued by King John of England in 1215 to create a framework for relationships between the King and his subjects.

It established the principle that everybody, including the King, was subject to the law for the first time in British history.

The original document contained 63 clauses mostly addressing specific grievances of King Johns rule. Almost all have been deleted, rewritten or repelled and only three remain law today. However out of the three that remain today clause 39, which gives all free men the right to justice and fair trial, is the most famous:

No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgement of his equals or by the law of the land. To no one will we sell, to no one deny or delay right or justice.

This one clause has been echoed across the globe in many constitutional documents; including the 1791 United States Bill of Rights, the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1950 European Convention on Human Rights.

Much of the remainder of the original document dealt with specific grievances regarding the ownership of land, the regulation of the justice system, and medieval taxes with no modern equivalent (such as ‘scutage’ and ‘socage’). It demanded the removal of fish weirs from the Thames, the Medway and throughout England; the dismissal of several royal servants; the standardisation of various weights and measures; and so on. The Magna Carta stated that no taxes could be demanded without the ‘general consent of the realm’, meaning the leading barons and churchmen. It re-established privileges which had been lost, and it linked fines to the severity of the offence so as not to threaten an individual’s livelihood. It also confirmed that a widow could not be forced to remarry against her wishes.

The Magna Carta was authenticated 15th June 1215 at Runnymede, on the River Thames, by King John of England using the Great Royal Seal. It is a common misconception that it was signed by King John, however the King possibly couldn’t write. It is unknown how many copies were drawn up originally, but four copies survive today; Lincoln Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral and two at the British Library, London (one of which is shown above).

MAGNA CARTA PIPE

The Magna Carta pipe has been specifically created and manufactured to celebrate the 800-year anniversary of one of the world’s most important documents.

This Shell Group 4 Bent pipe (4102), classic in shape and finish, is fitted with a Sterling Silver band engraved "Magna Carta 1215 – 2015".

Accompanying the pipe is a beautifully crafted Sterling Silver Tamper, which resembles the Great Royal Seal used by King John of England to authenticate the Magna Carta in 1215.

The pipe and tamper are presented in an exclusive leather bound box. The leather, which will age beautifully, has been specially chosen to reflect the parchment paper the document was written on and the lid has been laser engraved capturing a segment of the original text.

Accompanying the pipe and tamper is the hardcover book “Magna Carta - the Making and Legacy of the Great Charter” by Dan Jones detailing the history of the Magna Carta.

The edition is strictly limited to 200 units world-wide (of which No.1 will be kept in our archive).
