Manufacturer Description:
Virginia and Louisiana Perique, briefly pressed into a thin flake plate and then rolled to a long strand. This matures during further pressing and is then cut into thin slices.
Characterisation:
The Heritage Eclipse is a tobacco spun into a strand that was then sliced. Unlike most Curly Cuts, these discs are unusually large and with their diameter of about 4 cm are reminiscent of coins. The slices lie a bit dissaranged in the tin, but have a very clean cut. Predominant is a dark brown marbling with plenty of golden yellow inclusions and a round core of black-brown tobacco. The scent is pleasantly sweet with warm hay and raisins, as you know it from other good Virginia Perique-mixtures. The slightly spotted cover sheet indicates a moisture excess, but the Curlies are elastic, however not sticky, but easy to remove individually and need to be pre-dried at best.
Plugging:
The special shape of the Heritage Eclipse requires experience dealing with unusual tobaccos. The large Curlies are so elastic that they can be given bend and folded in one piece into the pipe, which should not be too small. You can also plug the slices formed into loose balls or grind them to get a Ready Rubbed-mixture of your own preference. Each of these types of preparation varies slightly the taste, but they should not all be plugged too tightly, as otherwise no good burning occurs. Also, you should finally give loose pieces of tobacco crumbs on the filling, as they accept the flame better and thus facilitate the formation of embers.
Light up:
The pressed tobacco of the Heritage Eclipse straightens slightly under the first flame, so you should gently use the tamper to straighten the surface. With the second flame you can reach an uniform glow.
Smoking properties:
The Heritage Eclipse delivers a full-bodied and spicy smoke. Intensely to taste are toasty notes that are reminiscent of juicy rye bread, even fine woody aromas mix in the smoky spice, but above is always a clear, pleasant natural sweetness. Plugged properly, the Heritage Eclipse burns quietly, but from time to time it may be necessary to gently press the embers with the tamper to the tobacco. When the Heritage Eclipse is extinguished, only a few unburned crumbs, medium gray ash and almost no condensate are left, making it very easy to clean the pipe.
Redolency:
The redolency of the Heritage Eclipse is for pure tobacco, so it needs tolerant company, if you do not want to attract attention.
Conclusion:
The Heritage Eclipse already makes fun to look at. Dark brown, gold-speckled tobacco with a neatly tidy dark core cut into generous round slices and deliciously scented - this unusual Curly requires some attention when plugging, but then rewards with the flavors of exquisite selected tobaccos. These are so well-balanced that the intense base spice and tart smoky aromas are rounded off by the notes of toasted bread and, above all, the distinct natural sweetness. This sweetness is not intrusive, but so clearly pronounced that probably some friends of flavored Mixtures will hardly miss any flavor. But lovers of Virginia Perique-mixtures get all they can want due to the balanced ratio of spice and natural sweetness.
