Characterisation:
If one chooses the No. 1 in the larger tin, so it can be stored well longer time even broken. Packaged in a pouch, however, it is better suited to be taken on the go uncomplicatedly. If you open the packaging you will see a narrow and short Loose Cut. It reminds a little of a cigarette tobacco, also by the even middle brown color. The scent is appetizingly sweet and reminiscent of a fruit cake with vanilla. Since the humidity seems just right, the No. 1 needs not to be pre-dried before plugging.
Plugging:
Despite the short cut, the No. 1 proves to be a bit cumbersome when plugging, so you should be a little careful when giving it down loosely and down a little tighter into the pipe. Since it straightens up under the flame, one should not make the pipe too full.
Light up:
The lighting of No. 1 may well need three flames, because the tobacco tends to rise even with careful plugging. The tamper serves well here to gently pat the tobacco before firing again evenly. However, once the tobacco is attentively ignited, it does not cause any problems in the burning.
Smoking properties:
As promised by the manufacturer, the vanilla flavor is rather subtle. The tobacco owes the used Java a tart-spicy note and probably the smokiness, too. These powerful aromas are surprising for a vanilla tobacco, but harmonize very pleasant with the delicate yet full-bodied vanilla note. Above all, beginners should be careful not to force the fine vanilla sweetness by puffing hard on the pipe, otherwise the tobacco can tingle on the tongue. Smoked cool, the No. 1 makes but no problems in burning and leaves only a little dark gray ash and hardly any condensate in the pipe for cleaning.
Redolency:
The smell in the room is mainly due to the contained Java clearly for tobacco, the vanilla aroma is hardly noticeable and so it needs a society that tolerates smokers, so you do not stand out negatively with the No. 1.
Conclusion:
The finely cut, medium brown No. 1 should not be plugged and ignited by absolute beginners, as this requires a bit of experience in handling more demanding tobaccos. Even the smoky, powerful spice may surprise some beginners, who expect sweetness from a vanilla tobacco. This offers the No. 1 certainly, but just as a rounding in the background. In fact, the No. 1 is more suitable for lovers of natural tobaccos and Java in particular. Or one uses it, as suggested by the manufacturer, as a very subtly flavored seasoning tobacco in their own or produced mixtures. Especially the contained Java, which is rather unusual in pipe tobacco, gives that certain something.
