Characterisation:
The Amphora Burley is packed in a pouch, which makes it very well suited to be easily put in the bag and taken away. However, if you want to store the tobacco for an extended period of time, you should give it into a tightly closable container to preserve the fine aroma of the tobacco. If you open the pouch, you will see inside a wide cut, very coarsely broken Ready Rubbed or rather longer, plucked Flake pieces, which are medium and dark brown and show lighter inclusions. The fragrance immediately reveals the Burley, because in addition to a hint of sweet hay, especially the typical natural baking-chocolate flavor of this tobacco is to sniff. Due to the larger pieces and the wide cut you should let the Amphora Burley dry for a short time, before you put it in the pipe.
Plugging:
If you do not choose a very large pipe bowl, you should rub the Flake pieces of the Amphora Burley before plugging to make filling the pipe easier. That is one of the reasons why you should be careful not to fill the pipe too tightly, as the pressed tobacco rises a little under the flame. With a little practice, however, this is relatively easy.
Light up:
Even when lighting the Amphora Burley requires some attention. Since the Ready Rubbed expands under the heat of the flames, you should proceed very evenly on the first ignition, gently straighten the surface with the tamper and again drive very thoroughly with the flame over the prepared tobacco. This may also be necessary a second time until a reliable ember is created.
Smoking properties:
The Amphora Burley has a very mild smoke, which is very soft, almost creamy and has only a very delicate spiciness, which gives the tobacco the necessary accent, so it does not slide into the triviality. In addition to the nutritious but light hints of nut, which are expected for a Burley-dominated tobacco, the Amphora Burley shows notes of juicy bread and chocolate. This, however, neither clearly sweet nor bitter, but very balanced reminiscent of dark chocolate cream. The coarser pieces of Flake make it necessary to push the embers from time to time with the tamper to the tobacco, even a further flame may eventually be necessary. Otherwise, however, the burning is very calm and cool, until at the end medium gray ash, some unburned crumbs and almost no condensate make the pipe cleaning not very complex.
Redolency:
The mildness of the Amphora Burley is also noticeable in the room, so the scent is indeed for tobacco, but slightly sweet and not intrusive, so that the tobacco in tolerant company should not attract attention.
Conclusion:
The rough preparation of the Amphora Burley requires some experience dealing with Ready Rubbed tobaccos. Otherwise, the tobacco is so mild and little burden that it would be fully recommended for beginners. However, since you need in between the tamper and may need to relight, you should not be a complete beginner in pipe smoking. For everyone else, the Amphora Burley offers, which the cold scent implicates, very typical Burley flavors of light nut with an unusually clear hint of chocolate that does not require any artificial support. The soft, gently spicy smoke does the rest to make it easier for even aroma fans to enter the world of natural tobaccos. If you are looking for a natural and at the same time in the best sense “aromatic” tobacco, will find it in the Amphora Burley for sure!
