Manufacturer Description:
Peterson Cask Aged English Mixture is a blend of aged Virginia tobaccos, a hint of Perique and some Black Cavendish. The tobacco blend has matured in old oak barrels for at least 3 years. With the Cask Aged English Mixture, whiskey is added to the tobacco - which comes from the Braunstein distillery in Denmark, whose exclusive spirits have already won several awards.
Characterisation:
The Cask Aged English Mixture comes in a round tin and is wrapped in a paper rosette. The cardboard cover is illustrated with a strikingly pretty depiction of a tobacco plant. A positive impression that is not marred by any moisture affecting the cardboard. The tobacco underneath is not too moist either. Light and medium brown fine cut mixes with broader black-brown portions and thinly cut Ready Rubbed. The pieces are gold speckled and somewhat coarsely rubbed. The scent is sweet and spicy and appetizingly reminiscent of spice bread. You can put the Cask Aged English Mixture into the pipe immediately after opening the tin.
Plugging:
If you pay attention to the coarser Ready Rubbed pieces and break them up if necessary, you can plug the Cask Aged English Mixture as usual: looser at the bottom and slightly thighter towards the top, although you should not fill the pipe too full, as the compressed tobacco rises under the flame.
Light up:
Due to the Ready Rubbed contained in the Cask Aged English Mixture, it may sometimes be necessary to have one flame more than usual to evenly ignite the tobacco. After lighting the fire for the first time, you should carefully smooth the surface with the tamper and carefully create an even ember with further flames.
Smoking properties:
The Cask Aged English Mixture is a slightly flavored tobacco. The Virginia dominates the smoke with a strong toast aroma, which is accompanied by a pleasant sweetness. This can be attributed to the otherwise unobtrusive whisky aroma, but it could also be due to a carefully selected Virginia or Cavendish. The pinch of Perique stays in the background as a fine spice, but is just the right rounding off. The Cask Aged English Mixture tends to gargle a bit if you get too greedy. It may also be necessary to gently press the tobacco with the tamper in between. However, the aroma of the tobacco is already well suited being smoked comfortably. So a bit of mindfulness during the smoking process should not be difficult. Since the development of condensate is limited if you don't smoke too hard, cleaning the pipe from the remaining medium-grey, fine ash is not difficult.
Redolency:
The Cask Aged English Mixture has a rather natural effect both in the pipe and in the room, so that you should be considerate of non-smoking company if you don't want to enjoy the tobacco alone.
Conclusion:
The rather light Cask Aged English Mixture is interspersed with coarser Ready Rubbed, so you should be careful when preparing the pipe and also during the smoking process. However, this also accommodates the enjoyment of tobacco. The Virginia, in particular, comes into the mix with clear toasted bread notes, while the whiskey aroma and the Perique remain in the background and thus contribute to a well-rounded overall picture. This makes the Cask Aged English Mixture an ideal tobacco for anyone who wants to try an English blend with Perique, but is not an absolute beginner in dealing with Ready Rubbed.
