Erik Stokkebye 4Th Generation

1855
The year my great-grandfather Erik Peter Stokkebye was born was the first decade in which he ventured into the tobacco business. He started with a retail store and eventually worked his way into manufacturing various tobacco products, including snuff, pipe tobacco and some cigars.

1882
The year the Stokkebye Tobacco Shop was founded is 1882. The picture shows my great-grandfather's original business license, which gave him the title of "Tobacco Maker" for a financial investment of 16 Danish Kroner (approximately $3.00 US) on September 27, 1882.

1897
My grandfather Erik Paul Stokkebye's year of birth was 1920. Erik Paul began his tobacco career working for his father and was eventually sent to Sumatra as a cigar tobacco manager. Back in the early 1920s, he and my grandmother sailed to the Far East. After an exciting 5 years in Sumatra, they returned to Denmark and my grandfather ultimately took over the management of the factory.

1931
This is the year my father Peter was born. Peter also started in the family business, but later wanted to come to America in the early 1950s and learn more about tobacco leaves. He developed a great affection for the United States, but business in Denmark required his presence and my parents returned there in the mid-1950s. Years later, after developing pipe tobacco for the US, my father decided to return to the US and he became a US citizen in the mid-1980s.

1957
This is my birth year. When I was a child, I took my first “steps” in business by helping my grandfather in the factory on Saturdays (yes, Saturdays were half days back then). Later in life, I also spent a year in the tobacco fields and warehouses in the southern tobacco states learning how to classify tobacco leaves. In the late 1980s, I was excited to rejoin our family business and worked hard to develop new blends for our brands.

Characterisation:
If you uncover the round tin of the 4th Generation 1882 Founder's Blend and open the paper rosette, you will find the tobacco tightly pressed under the wrapper. When loosened up, an evenly light, medium and dark brown mixture appears. The fibers are narrow, elongated and curly cut. If you sniff it, the sweet, smoky, spicy, bacony scent reveals the Latakia it contains. The firm pressing and the oily oriental tobaccos retain some moisture, so the loosened fibers should be aired for a quarter of an hour before plugging.

Plugging:
Thanks to the fine cut, plugging is quick and easy. What is common for loose tobacco also applies to the 4th Generation 1882 Founder's Blend. You start loosely at the bottom and end with a little pressure. Since the special charakter of this tobacco can leave an aftertaste in the pipe, you should be aware of this when choosing your pipe.

Light up:
Pre-dried, the 4th Generation 1882 Founder's Blend can be lit with two flames. After the first flame, you smooth the surface with the tamper and light it again. The tobacco will be ecpected to burn until the end of the filling.

Smoking  properties:
The 4th Generation 1882 Founder's Blend is richly smoky. It proves to be a surprising melange of characteristics of both typically English and Irish blends. The Virginia is present with mild roasted bread and its spice accompanies the savoury smokiness of the Oriental. The Latakia keeps the tobacco pleasantly cool and underlines the background with light incense. An alkaline, salty note is mixed with an astringent effect that lovers of Irish tobaccos call perfumed. Something like the scent of a fine soap. Overall, it's exceptional and something that encourages you to sip comfortably and mindfuly enjoy the components. The ash that remains is light, fine and easy to clean thanks to the scarce condensate.

Redolency:
The redolency of the 4th Generation 1882 Founder's Blend is typical of an English tobacco. Powerful and penetrating. Non-smokers should either be known as tolerating this or you enjoy the tobacco with like-minded people. Respectively in the fresh air.

Conclusion:
Unusual. That pretty much describes the 4th Generation 1882 Founder's Blend. The English blend, which is typically dark in both appearance and scent, combines the typical features of this type of tobacco but adds a clear Irish character. You should like it and reserve your own pipe for it if necessary. But the 4th Generation 1882 Founder's Blend is definitely worth it, because it's easy to smoke without getting boring. There aren't many tobaccos that combine the toasty spice of a Virginia with cool, ethereal Latakia, smoky-spicy Oriental and the perfume of an Irish blend. Certainly not for every occasion, perhaps not for beginners and every day, but definitely worth a try if you are open to being positively overwhelmed by an uncompromisingly traditional English-style tobacco.
