Characterisation:
Already when you open the round tin of the Pure Perique you know that something unusual is imminent. The scent pouring into the nose is intense and pungent and reminiscent of vinegar – if you want to be friendly and exert yourself while sniffing – apple cider vinegar. If one raises the brown soaked paper and the equally spotty cover sheet, then one sees dark brown, narrow and rather crumbly-short seeming tobacco, which looks very damp and absolutely should be thoroughly pre-dried before plugging. The increased moisture content should also be considered when mixing with other tobaccos.
Plugging:
If you pre-dry it well the Pure Perique can be plugged relatively easy. At the bottom a bit looser and getting tighter, you get a good burning. If you want to smoke the tobacco pure - which is not necessarily recommended - you should choose a small pipe bowl, otherwise you take too much tobacco due to the small cut.
Light up:
Again, it requires the thorough pre-drying, if you don´t want to re-ignite the tobacco several times. Prepared accordingly, after the first flame, it is sufficient to press the filling with the tamper and then to give fire again.
Smoking properties:
The Pure Perique makes it clear from the first puff that it is a seasoning tobacco that should not be smoked on its own. It is harsh, with grassy and resinous notes, very smoky and acts by it already severe and strong, to which the nicotine content does the rest. The burning, however, is relatively straightforward, if one uses from time to time the tamper. Remaining are medium gray ash and a little condensate.
Redolency:
The scent of the Pure Perique is as austere as its taste and this should be considered in terms of blends. In non-smoking society, this tobacco fits rather not and so probably also blends with it.
Conclusion:
Smoking the Pure Perique unmixed is an experience in itself and something that beginners absolutely have to be discourage of. Even the very "rustic" to be named presentation is not suitable for beginners, as this makes clear demands on the preparation. The strong smell, the dark color and the high humidity, which is due to the making, prepares already for a pronounced taste. And so the tobacco is also very smoky. The resinous and grassy spice will please lovers of strong and tart aromas. The Pure Perique is the ideal tobacco to add a spice to an already existing Mixture. But also as a seasoning tobacco in the background of its own blend of other "pure" tobaccos the Pure Perique is suitable for. A naturally sweet Virginia or gentle Burley will show a different face with a pinch of Pure Perique and the combination with strong Kentucky is just as conceivable for lovers of strong Mixtures as a round pinch in spicy oriental Mixtures. Anything goes!
