Manufacturer Description:
Virginia tobaccos matured under high pressure with a discreet flavour of aromatic fruits. Burns down coolly and emphasizes the natural sweetness of the flakes.
Characterisation:
The Royal Navy Flake is an approximately 1 mm thick, evenly golden brown flake with a few darker inclusions. From the can a fragrance rises, which resembles an orange studded with cloves, pleasantly fresh and fruity but warm and spicy too. The natural tobacco scent is only to guess. By its more mellow not too moist texture it can be plugged without further preparations.
Plugging:
Since the Royal Navy Flake is quite friable, it is easier to rub it out into a more or less coarse mixture. With care, however, it can also be applied bent and folded into the pipe, because it is quite elastic and not too dry. It requires some care when lighting, so you should not plug it to firm. Give some loose tobacco fibers on top of the filling, which takes the flame more quickly than the Flake.
Light up:
The Royal Navy Flake requires - despite its rather dry appearance – more than one flame until it burns well. Until the surface burns evenly, it should been flatten gently after each flame with the tamper before giving fire again. If the flake is burning evenly then, it goes out hardly again.
Smoking properties:
The struggle of lighting is definitely worthwhile. The Royal Navy Flake surprises with quite spicy and full-bodied flavors that are otherwise rather Latakia or Kentucky attributable. But it is a powerful Virginia, which produces these flavors. The casing is giving a fine fruity, never exaggerated flavor, and a sweetness that supports the not very sweet Virginia. The added flavor is here almost perfectly matched to the tobacco. Not whitewashing, but tickling out the natural nuances of the tobacco. At the end the flavor recedes and the spicy tobacco occurs quite evident. What remains is medium to dark gray ash that makes little problems during cleaning.
Redolency:
The sweetish flavor of the Royal Navy Flake is rather unremarkable and could be even perceived as pleasant typical pipesmoke in non-smoking society.
Conclusion:
The Royal Navy Flake is a golden brown, quite crumbly Flake, the scent of cloves and oranges is a little reminiscent of the festive season. The plugging is very simple, but the kindling should be done with a little patience and care as the Flake tends to go out otherwise. However, once it burns evenly, then it does not gargle even while inattentive smoking and regales with surprisingly spicy Virginia flavors until the end. These are pleasantly accompanied sweet and fruity by the added casing, without whitewshing the tobacco taste. If one takes time when lighting up, then the Royal Navy Flake is due to its average strength also is a good and cheap flake for everyday and certainly also for beginners.
