Manufacturer Description:
The wonderful balance of this English mixture represents the unity of the Dutch and Flemish members of the Pipe Smokers Forum PRF. The blend is wonderfully balanced and has been blended nuancedly from Red Virginia, Latakia, Black Cavendish, Oriental and Perique.
Characterisation:
In the round tin with a pressure lid, you will find the Brullende Leeuw as a mixture of different cuts and colours. The cutting width of the mainly black-brown fibers varies between medium wide and narrow, they are also somewhat shorter. The dark brown fibers are longer and slightly curly and evenly penetrate the pattern. The rising scent is slightly smoky and infused with a faintly sweet floral touch. The tobacco is not overly moist, but it doesn't hurt to let it dry a little before plugging.
Plugging:
As is usual with loose mixtures, the Brullende Leeuw can be brought into the pipe loosely at the bottom and tighter towards the top.
Light up:
The Brullende Leeuw is just as easy to light as it is to plug. Once the surface has been evenly lit, smoothing with the tamper and another flame is usually sufficient to create an even ember.
Smoking properties:
The Brullende Leeuw smokes uncomplicated and cool, which is mainly due to the oriental tobaccos. They give the tobacco a pleasant softness. The Latakia is reminiscent of the smoke from burning chimney, while the creamy-sour Oriental contributes earthy aromas. The Virginia is responsible for the fruity notes that run through. This is accompanied by hints of bread and grass. The spicy dried fruit aromas of the Perique harmonize the impression in the background and the Black Cavendisch also provides a touch of sweetness to round it off. This interplay of the different tobaccos creates a varied and at the same time mild, unobtrusive smoking process. Only occasionally does it have to be refired, but that doesn't diminish the enjoyment. The fine, light-colored ash that remains reveals above all the Orientals it contains and the pleasingly low level of condensate makes cleaning very easy.
Redolency:
Although the Brullende Leeuw only includes small amounts of Latakias and Orients, the aroma could still be too strong for non-smokers, so that the tobacco is particularly suitable for meetings with like-minded people or for the fresh air.
Conclusion:
The Brullende Leeuw is a predominantly dark blend with light touches that is as easy to prepare as it is to smoke. It turns out to be well composed, because the many tobaccos contained are very harmonious in the smoke. The dominant smoky-earthy Orientals make the smoke cool and smooth, while the toasted bread and dried fruit aromas of Virginia, Perique and Black Cavendish provide a pleasant rounding off. The aromas that do not get out of hand, as well as the light to medium strength and the easy smokability of the Brullende Leeuw make the tobacco very well suited for beginners who would like to try the world of English blends.
