Manufacturer Description:
For the preparation of Kratermischung no. 4, lemon yellow and orange Virginia tobaccos from the US and Africa are pressed after the first processing and rolled into strands. After long maturation, these strands are then pressed together into square bars and cut into Flakes. A full-bodied tobacco with a clearly sweet accent.
Characterisation:
The Flake-slices of the Kratermischung No. 4 lie in two neat stacks next to each other in the round tin. The Flakes have an unusual, almost square profile and one recognizes in cross section an s-shaped curved marbling of medium and dark brown tobacco with ample golden inclusions. The scent is as appetizing as the appearance, it reminds you of tart-sweet chocolate. With a little bit of caution, the Flakes can be easily detached from each other, but they are so elastic that they should be allowed to pre-dry.
Plugging:
The unusual, rather broad format makes it difficult to smoke the Kratermischung No. 4 in small pipes. Here it is advisable to loosen up the tobacco to a more or less fine Ready Rubbed. For larger pipe bowls you can also bring the Kratermischung No. 4 bend and folded or rolled in not too compact balls into the pipe. As the tobacco straightens under the flame, one should not plug too hard or too high, and of course, loose tobacco crumbs will help in lighting.
Light up:
As with every Flake, let the faint embers go out after the first flame, then gently bring the raised fibers back into the pipe with the tamper, straighten the surface, and then give fire again evenly. Maybe the Kratermischung No. 4 needs this treatment a second time, but then it burns down reliably.
Smoking properties:
The Kratermischung No. 4 offers in the sweet flavoring a surprisingly natural-looking smoke. There is nothing sticky-sugary here, instead, it tastes of tart-spicy tobacco and also roasted bread flavors appear, so that one has the impression of smoking a natural tobacco. However, keeping the pipe deliberately cool, you notice a fine sweetness, not intrusive, but very pleasant, paired with the smoky tobacco gives the impression of salty caramel, with its delicate-bitter hints. This aroma lasts until the last third of the filling, then the basic tobaccos are intensified again before they go out and leave only bright, fine ash and some sticky tobacco crumbs. Condensate hardly arises.
Redolency:
In the redolence of Kratermischung No. 4 is little smell of the aroma, so you should smoke the tobacco only in companies that tolerate natural Mixtures.
Conclusion:
First and foremost, the Kratermischung No. 4 is a wonderful example of the art of making a Flake visually appealing too. An s-shaped curved marbling is not often seen on the already clear supply of Flakes. Here is the Kratermischung No. 4 ever something special. However, the almost square shape requires some experience in dealing with Flakes, otherwise it can cause problems in the burning. Otherwise, the Kratermischung No. 4 smokes easily and convinces by a natural aroma, which does not put a spell on the spicy basic tobaccos, but supportive contributes a pleasant caramel note, which will also convince smokers, who otherwise feel rather scared of sweet-flavored tobaccos.
