Christmas Pipe
This special limited edition pipe with a sterling silver band has been produced for Christmas 1981
The 1981 Dunhill Christmas pipe is so scarce few collectors have ever seen one. It is a Bruyere bent Rhodesian with a silver band that was engraved with a sprig of holly. The pipe was encased in a cloisonné burl wood box with suede lining, and therein lies the reason behind its scarcity. The 1981 Christmas pipe should have sold for $650, but somehow, the published retail price did not include the cost of the very expensive case, and the pipe was listed for only $425. As soon as the error was discovered, the pipe was immediately yanked out of production and off the market, never to be seen again. But not before approximately 96 of these pipe had been sold (the number has also been estimated to be as low as 75). Having such a small number of these second-year-of –issue pipes in existence make it extremely difficult for anyone to put together a full set of Dunhill Christmas pipes. In fact, at a pipe expo some years ago, a collector entered his “complete” set of all the Alfred Dunhill Christmas pipes in a best-of-theme contest. All that is, except for the 1981 pipe, which, he reasoned, was too rare to be acknowledged and therefore shouldn’t count. The judges weren’t a complete set at all.
