IMPERIAL PAGODA PIPES
PAGODA ARCHITECTURE
Pagoda is the general term for a tiered tower with multiple
eaves common in Nepal, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and other parts of
Asia.
|
Most pagodas were built to have a religious function and were
often located in or near temples. Therefore, the Pagoda could be described as an
oriental style of sacred tower. This term may refer to other religious
structures in some countries.
The architectural structure of the Pagoda style has spread
across Asia, taking on many diverse forms as details specific to different
regions are incorporated into the overall design. This style can also be found
in contemporary architecture. |
JADE GEMSTONES
The term Jade gemstones refers to both the Nephrite and Jadeite
mineral varieties. The English word Jade derived from the Spanish piedra de
ijada (first recorded in 1565) or loin stone, drawn from from its reputation to
cure loin and kidney diseases. Nephrite derived from lapis nephriticus, the
Latin version of the Spanish piedra de ijada.
In ancient China, Jade was used for utilitarian and ceremonial
purposes as early as 6000 BC and was considered to be the imperial gem and to
possess mystical powers. In the long history of the Chinese empire, Jade had
always held a very special significance, not only for the finest cult objects,
but as furnishings for high-ranking nobility and the imperial family.
Still today, the best quality Jade can easily compare in value
to that of gold or diamonds. |
|
As both varieties of Jade are very tough (hardness 6 to 7) and
harder than steel, special diamond encrusted tools and techniques are needed to
carve and polish them. Nephrite can be found in creamy white form as well as in
a variety of green colours, whereas Jadeite can have more colour variations
including blue, lavender to mauve, pink and emerald-green colours. Of the two,
Jadeite is the rarer variety.
Whereas Nephrite deposits exist in China and Taiwan, Canada,
Russia, New Zealand, Australia and the USA, Jadeite deposits are found in
Guatemala, the USA, Japan and especially Myanmar (former Burma).
The Jadeite used on this limited edition is Type A Jade, meaning
it is untreated Jade processed using traditional, non-evasive methods (no
artificial colouring, bleaching or chemical injections).

2007 October 17 - Werner
Mummert

Dear pipesmokers and collectors,
It was recently brought to my attention about offered pipes from
private collections or other private sources which had a signet similar to the
one I am using. The style, the wood quality and stem has nothing in common with
the pipe which I make in small quantity.
For this reason, I would like to briefly explain how an original
pipe of me can be recognized.
Basically I stamp the pipes with my Signet. The stamping is done
when the pipe is finished, ie when a staining is applied will be dented. This
stamp is always the same color as the finish around the pipe.
In the early days of my creative time, I also have applied
capital letters in the stem, from A to E, according to the wood quality of the
pipe. Also occasionally I used a stamping with the words "Bruyere."
|
Some years ago I made a small series of pipes with my signature
and an additional signet "Asher". These pipes were sent to the USA and some of
them appear occasionally on Ebay. These pipes are authentical.
Later, I designed a logo with the words Werner Mummert, Hand
Made in Germany. This text is engraved in the finished pipe, appearing mostly
brighter than the surface of the pipe.
If you have any concerns on the authenticity of a pipe I made,
please contact one of my dealers or directly myself. If you send me a picture, I
can proof the authenticity. If you look at my homepage under the link history,
you might find the pipe which you are trying to verify.

Manuel Shaabi sadly has
to cease making pipes for a minimum of 1 to 2 years.
Whether Manuel would be
able to continue after the expiration of this time is current totally uncertain.
Regretfully all the best wishes for his further future from

2007 August 28 - Rainer
Barbi

Abridgement of
Rainer Barbi’s letter from 2007 August 27th
Dear friends of smoking
pipes,
as I had to realise, in
the last time some plagiarism of my product line “Rainer Barbi” came
up.
One of the supplier at eBay is the company “Le Tigri
Volanti”, which trades under the name “vinipipe”. Also it seems that there are
others, who are working in that forged pattern too. However it’s the question,
if they are initiator or only victims.
A part of the offered pieces are definitely plagiarism,
mixed with originals... Neither the shapes nor the styling do correspond to the
originals, as well the embossed logo on the mouthpiece is missing...
