Vintage Tobacco

The tobacco blending counter featuring the famous "My Mixture" Book.

Comparison of vintage tobacco vs. current versions

Comparison Dunhill Early Morning Pipe Vintage / Dunhill Early Morning Pipe current

Dunhill Early Morning Pipe (approx. 1985) / Dunhill Early Morning Pipe (approx. 1980)

Cortically both versions differs by the missing warnings, a little bit creamier colours and the design. The older tin and it’s inlay shows the Dunhill-emblem, what is missing on the new version completely.

The appearance of the tobaccos doesn’t differ very much: The vintage is somewhat darker, but overall similar to the current version. The cut is identically, too. By opening the tin a flashy smell, nearly as overripe tobacco, appears. But this slightly sweet smell evaporates rather quick and a spicy, by Latakia affected smell comes to the front. The tobacco seems to be a little bit less dampish, but in good condition at all.

By lighting up the older tobacco tends noticeable more to swell. Therefore the pipe shouldn’t be plugged to it’s maximum. Lighting up is somewhat time-consuming, because it may be necessary to damp a few times and light up again, before the tobacco glows constant to the end.

The taste of the older tobacco is smoother as a new, fresh opened tin. The single nuances melt to a round, spicy taste, which is a little bit more affected by Latakia. The fine sweetness of the Virginias couldn’t be noticed clearly. As the taste of the fresh tobacco is already mild, the older one seems to be creamier. In contrast to that the strength appears to be more remarkable.

The vintage shows the same good smoking properties as the fresh tobacco, tends more to smoke hot, but with attention it’s a little bit more pleasing and interesting. Glowing down is also accompanied by somewhat condensate and the same darker grey ash remains.

The redolence is anything more distinctive as from the current tobacco. Spicily, stronger but not displeasing. Latakia and Orient are the affecting tobaccos.

The older tobacco shows similar pleasing, but definitely more maturely, smoking properties as a fresh opened, current tin. No spikes, as example of Virginia, are remarkable and the nuances of the tobaccos melt to a rounded overall taste.

Conclusion: Smoother and creamier, otherwise similar to the current mixture. A little bit stronger and more spicy in redolence could be noticed, if the possibility of comparison was given. But overall this tobacco kept rather constant.

Comparison Erinmore Mixture Vintage / Erinmore Mixture current

Erinmore Mixture (2008) / Erinmore Mixture (approx. 1981)

Already the outlook of the package shows noticeable differences: The colours of the older version of the tin are a little bit darker and creamier, the imprint and the logo are simpler designed. Opening the tin the paper-inlay and cover are yellow-brown coloured by time. The text of the cover is equal, but it’s interesting, that the dating of the vintage is “For over 160 years” and the current one is “For almost 200 years”.

The character is definitely darker with only a few brighter brown tobacco streaks and the cut is finer with less wider streaks. The smell of the flavour is noticeable more maturely, nearly overripe. Nevertheless the mixture appears “smoother”, because spikes of Virginia and the flavour barely come to the front, but at the same time it’s more intensive. The tobacco is a little bit dryer, but still well conditioned.

The smoking properties of the aged tobacco is similar to the current Version, but definitely more maturely too. Also no spikes of single tobaccos, as example Virginia, and the flavour is merging with the taste of the tobacco. The taste is stronger, but more harmonic, whereby the taste of tobacco is still more dominating than the aromas.

The same is guilty for the redolence: Due to the common maturing of the tobaccos no one is dominating, but the smell of tobacco is more distinctive. The flavour, that smells slightly overripe by opening the tin, does attract less attention than the flavour of the current mixture. The better handling of the aged tobacco is conspicuous too. Less tending to die down, more evenly glowing and less tending to overheat, because the vintage could be smoked slower.

Conclusion: Smoother but nevertheless pure taste of tobacco, heavier and distinctive, but harmonious in redolence. The smoker who has once enjoyed this aged version would think back wistfully, but would be glad, that the current Erinmore Mixture is excellent too.

The Balkan Sobranie
Original Smoking Mixture

50g pouch and 5x50g pouches

One of the world´s classic pipe tobaccos - is an artful blend of light and dark Virginias, intermingled with the finest Macedonian leaf and enhanced by the distinctive taste and aroma of Latakia.

It was the original creator of Balkan Sobranie, well over a country ago, who brought to perfection the art of blending fine tobaccos of the Orient - Latakia, Yenidje and the pick of all Macedonia – with those of the great tobacco lands of North America. The resultant subtleties of taste and aroma are now, as then, truly an experience to savour.
