Manufacturer Description:
This full-bodied, typical Irish Virginia Flake is enriched with a little bit Kentucky, which gives the sweet Virginia a hint of spice. Experienced smokers admire this mouth-watering flake. At least they know to admire the slow and cool burning down of this cut.
Characterisation:
The 3 inch long, 1 inch wide and about 0.4 inch thick slices are lying ordinary straightened up in the rectangle tin. The slices are mostly dark brown with some medium brown and less yellow parts. They give off a spicy, unaltered tobacco smell. The consistency of the slices is very compact and stable. The rubbed tobacco feels optimal conditioned.
Plugging:
The University Flake could be plugged with the “bend and folding method” as well as rubbed to a mixture. With both methods it’s recommended to take care to plug not too compact: This tobacco swells definitely while burning down.
Light up:
The tobacco tends heavy to straighten up. It could be light up very well with one or two flames, but it must be flattened with the tamper a few times, before it becomes “gentle”.
Smoking properties:
The University Flake is a strong, naturally tobacco. Beside sweet nuances of the Virginia the strong, spicy Kentucky dominates definitely. This gives the flake a meaty strength, which should not be sneezed at. The taste is pure tobacco too, similar to a mild cigar. Burning down is slowly and cool, whereby – as by any tobacco – the smoker should take care, that it’ll be not smoked too hot. But with a little bit attention the University Flake could be smoked with less condensate to a balance of a bright grey ash.
Redolency:
The redolence is more spicy and like a cigar too. Due to that the smell is a little bit more obtrusive, but not unpleasing. The tobacco is suited for convivial gatherings, in restaurants it’s out of place.
Conclusion:
The University Flake is a naturally, strong and dark tobacco. The compact slices are good to handle, whereby after lighting up it’s necessary to dampen a few times with the tamper, because the tobacco tends heavy to straighten up. Burning down is good-natured and without too much attention the flake could be smoked dry and cool to a balance of bright grey ash. The character is similar to a good cigar, what could be noticed in both, taste and redolence. The portion of Kentucky gives this tobacco a definite strength, so that it’s more suited after lunch or dinner and not necessarily recommended for beginners.
