Fred, affectionately called “Old Fredder“ by his friends, counts Virginia/Perique Flakes among his greatest passions. Obviously, Old Fredder‘s Broken Flake is tailor-made for him. A natural, wonderfully balanced Virginia/Perique Broken Flake that packs a punch, too. The rather tart Red Virginia grades harmonize beautifully with the Louisiana Perique I chose for this blend. The result is an unusually strong-flavored tobacco, complex in taste and off the mainstream. A blend that leaves no room for boredom. Characterisation:
When opening the tin of the Old Fredder's Broken Flake immediately rises a sweet smell in the nose, which is clearly reminiscent of raisins, but is not attributed to artificial flavor but selected good tobaccos. The Broken Flake is rather long-fiber cut, well rubbed and shows a predominantly medium-brown color, which is penetrated with golden-brown injections, there are also a few darker fibers. The moisture is just right, but it does not hurt to let the tobacco dry a little before smoking.
Plugging:
The Old Fredder's Broken Flake is well rubbed and not too damp, but like all pressed tobaccos, this also tends to rise under the heat when igniting, which is why you should not go too hard by plugging and also leave some space to the rim of the pipe. Loose tobacco crumbs as a conclusion will take the flame more quickly.
Light up:
The Old Fredder's Broken Flake rises strong under the flame, so it can be necessary to give fire several times and to smooth the filling until you have reached an even embers. Then, however, the tobacco burns to the end of the filling.
Smoking properties:
Already at the first puff, the Old Fredder's Broken Flake is strong and spicy and the strength of the tobacco is immediately apparent. Smoky notes and the natural tobacco flavor are dominating, as described by the manufacturer, and the Perique is also strongly represented. The spice continues to increase towards the end of the smoking process. If the Old Fredder's Broken Flake is gently smoked, gentler flavors reveal a subtle, sweet sweetness and toasted roasted notes. Unlike many other Virginia-Perique mixes, you do not need to worry about tongue-burning or gargling. The tobacco is very easy to smoke, and is demanding due to its strength not to smoke to greedy. You should only pay attention to press the glow from time to time with the tamper to the tobacco, then the tobacco burns reliably to the end light gray ash, a few unburnt crumbs and almost no condensate makes the cleaning very simple.
Redolency:
The room note of the Old Fredder's Broken Flake is tart and for tobacco, so it is advisable to smoke it in a smoking society or in the open air.
Conclusion:
The Old Fredder's Broken Flake is a medium-brown, well-grinded Broken Flake, which is already by its strength to more experienced pipe-smoking. Even the preparation of the pipe wants to be skillful, but if this succeeds, the Old Fredder's Broken Flake shows up as a satisfying tobacco, which, apart from an occasional afterstop, hardly makes any demands. As promised by the manufacturer, the smoker expects a strong tobacco, whose aromas are also strong. Also Perique was not saved, so the Old Fredder's Broken Flake recommends rather for the end of the day or to the conclusion of a substantial meal. For lovers of strong tobaccos a real recommendation!
