Manufacturer Description:
As the days get shorter and the nights darker, the time of Night Owl has come. The Night Owl's tobacco base is made from selected, pressed Red Virginia's, which stand out for their sweet, malty, slightly caramel-like flavor. Harmoniously they go hand in hand with a peaty, cocoa-like Burley, to which the peppery spice, the dry fruity taste of Perique has been added as a palate-playing counterpoint. A touch of Kentucky gives this taste texture the finishing touch. Profound, tasteful, multi-layered and stoically resting in itself - like an owl in the evening, that's where it comes from, the Night Owl. With it and a beer, the passionate smoker will find and enjoy his evening conclusion.
Characterisation:
When opening the tin, the cover sheet of the Night Owl is slightly wavy, below is a medium and dark brown Ready Rubbed, the medium-wide, but slightly longer cut and neatly rubbed. The scent rising from the open tin is surprisingly aromatic. Since the manufacturer uses no flavor this must be due to the good quality of the basic tobaccos. Especially the used Burley characterizes the fragrance with distinct echoes of dark chocolate, which mixes the sweetness of dried fruit, as is often the case with good Virginia-mixtures. In principle, the tobacco does not seem to be too damp, but those who are worried about the cover sheet can let the tobacco dry for half an hour.
Plugging:
A little experience in dealing with Ready Rubbed tobacco one should already have, as it extend under the flame a bit and which should be considered when plugging. However, if you do not choose a pipe that is too small and do not press the tobacco in too tightly, the Night Owl does not cause any problems.
Light up:
Like almost every Ready Rubbed, the Night Owl also needs the help of the tamper after the first flame to smooth the surface and prepare it for the embers. With the second flame, you can now paint evenly over the surface and thus ensure a constant burnup.
Smoking properties:
The manufacturer's description can let expect a hefty tobacco and that's the Night Owl too. Already in the first puffs it shows clearly smoky and strong in the nicotine content. Even the peaty flavors mentioned by the manufacturer - rather unusual for a Burley - are actually to be tasted, which harmonizes wonderfully with the deep, full spice that probably owed Perique and Kentucky. This is joined by the Virginia less sweet, because with a significant toasted bread note, so that gives an overall picture, as expected from a strong evening tobacco. Thanks to the Ready Rubbed, the burning is calm and contemplative. Except for a few medium-gray ashes, a few unburned tobacco crumbs and hardly any condensate, there is nothing left to do about cleaning.
Redolency:
The Night Owl is by the use of spicy tobaccos and its strength rather not suitable to be enjoyed in non-smoking society. But its strong flavors lose nothing, even in the fresh air.
Conclusion:
Assuming a little experience in dealing with Ready Rubbed tobaccos, the medium and dark brown Night Owl with its delicious fruit-chocolate fragrance is very frugal. Its powerful aromas do not necessarily make it suitable for beginners and its nicotine content requires a certain basis, but who appreciates smoky, even peaty tobaccos, in which profound spice mixes with toasted bread, so rather tart tobaccos make a powerful alliance, will be convinced by the Night Owl. This tobacco is less suitable for every occasion, but rather for the cozy evenings or long walks in the cold season, where even stormy wind barely take its strength.
