Manufacturer Description:
Scotney ... dark brown, aromatic, strong. These are the most likely attributes that characterize the Scotney ready rubbed Flake. A strong Virginia / Perique ready rubbed Flake forms the basis of the Scotney. A subtle topping, which complements the tobaccos character to its best, giving the Scotney its unmistakable aroma.
The Scotney consists of 3 different Indian Virginias and 10% Perique. The flake is cold pressed for 1 week and then re-pressed for several weeks in the screw-press to maturity. The ripening season gives Scotney its soft character and full flavor. After rubbing it out the Scotney is provided with a subtle topping that gives it that “certain something”. A top-class tobacco for a full and satisfying smoking experience. A specialty that is looking for its peers.
Characterisation:
The Scotney is a roughly grated Ready Rubbed whose fibers are cut longer but very narrow. The pieces are medium and dark brown with lighter inclusions. The sourish smell clearly reveals Perique's dull, vinegar-like impact. Since the tobacco looks a bit damp, it can be pre-dried before being plugged.
Plugging:
As is customary with Ready Rubbed tobaccos, one should make sure not to bring the Scotney too hard in the pipe, otherwise there will be a bad puffing. Exercise in handling this tobacco facilitates handling. If you then add some loose, finer crumbs to the filling, then you will relieve the lighting.
Light up:
The Scotney needs two or three flames to reach a good glow. Also, you should smooth the surface gently with the tamper each time, so that the burning takes place evenly.
Smoking properties:
The Scotney is classified by the manufacturer as strong, but you should not be scared of it. Due to its creamy and cool smoke, the intensity does not interfere with the weight. Sure, the tobacco is rather strong, but the nicotine does not overwhelm the flavors. These clearly represent the classic direction of a Virginia-Perique-Mixture. Not surprisingly, then, the Scotney tastes in addition to soft tobacco spice clearly to sweet dried fruit and toasted bread. The flavoring may add to the sweetness, but seems very discreet. Only medium gray ashes, few unburned crumbs and almost no condensate remain, which makes cleaning very simple.
Redolency:
The scent of the Scotney is for tobacco and spicy - but in a tolerant or smoking society you can smoke it.
Conclusion:
The Scotney is a Ready Rubbed, whose light vinegar scent betrays the contained Perique. The preparation is a bit more demanding, so the tobacco is not aimed at absolute beginners in dealing with Ready Rubbed tobaccos. The strength should not deter. Sure, the tobacco is not light, but the smoke is so creamy and cool that you can devote yourself to the pleasure of the typical flavors of a Virginia-Perique-blend. A real flavor is not to be tasted, so that the toasted bread notes and the dry fruit-sweetness of the Scotney is also aimed at lovers of natural Mixtures.
