Manufacturer Description:
Wind and weather have drawn the face of this old skipper, and yet he exudes calm and gentleness. Hearty and strong flavor is also this Flake - and yet so soft and gentle. A mixture of fine Belt Virginia grades, pressed for days and then stored until full maturity. Full-bodied, with a pleasant sweetness - looking for a culinary delight for those who love strong and among the flakes else offered it in vain.
Characterisation:
The DTM Skipper's Flake is cut in 5 cm wide slices, wrapped in paper and nestled snugly in the round tin. The color is a medium brown to ocher playing with golden speckles and irregularly dark spots. The consistency is rather dry and quite brittle, however elastic enough to bring the flake at a time into the pipe. As you would expect from a pure Virginia is offering the typical tart dark bread and hay fragrance, next to it there are prunes to sniff.
Plugging:
The crumbly consistency of the DTM Skipper's Flake proves as an advantage in plugging. It can be easily rubbed and stuffed as mixture. However, it is elastic enough to get it with some attention bent and folded in the pipe. As with all flakes applies: stuff not too tight! The compact tobacco rears up something if lighted. Some tobacco crumbs out of the tin, as the top layer on the filling, facilitate the kindling.
Light up:
The DTM Skipper's Flake can ignite easily. One or two flames and a a gentle smoothing of the filling with the pusher let burn down the flake until the final in an easy matter.
Smoking properties:
The DTM Skipper's Flake is very friendly on the tongue for a pure Virginia. Only when it is smoked too hot it is biting and then reminds for a still good cigarette. If it goes out and is then ignited again, so this hurts the flavor too little. Smoked slowly it burns cool and very dry and discloses its very round flavor, which is dominated by strong tart-smoky notes, just a very subtle sweetness and a hint of bittersweet taste. The smoke is strong and sets in the further course in strength, both in terms of the real tobacco flavor and nicotine. Is the embers always covered by ash whith a little help of the tamper, so the DTM Skipper's Flake burns free of condensate leaving only gray-white, powdery ash in the pipe.
Redolency:
The room note of the DTM Skipper's Flake tobacco is strong and reminiscent of cigarette smoke. Thus, it could be bothersome in nonsmokers society.
Conclusion:
The DTM Skipper's Flake is a medium brown flake, which is easy to fill and inflame due to its rather crumbly consistency. Its scent of hay, black bread and dried plums shows the pure Virginia. But different for many representatives of this direction it is to smoke easily and forgives mistakes. This makes it an easy entry into the world of pure virginia-flakes for beginners who do not shy away from stronger tobaccos. But also the more experienced smokers will certainly encounter benevolence.
