Eifel-Pipes
The Eifel - a region between Aachen and Treves
(Trier) with one of Germany's most beautiful natural parks. Besides a lot of
tourism, you mainly find agriculture and craftsmanship with much tradition in
this rural atmosphere.
At the edge of this fascinating landscape there are
living two pipe makers who are keeping a close and regular cooperation despite a
distance of about 60 km. In honor of their native landscape they named their
work "Eifel-Pipes". Gerd Fassbaender, an independent craftsman from Euskirchen
and Heinz-Guenter Doeteberg, a chemist from Stolberg, near Aachen.
7th Pipe-Fair in Lohmar 2012
Each pipe maker has his own workshop where handmade
pipes of briar with handmade mouthpieces from ebonit, or by request also from
acrylic, and sometimes with applications, are created. The shapes are ranging
from classic to freeform. Partly there are also almost forgotten traditional
techniques for colouration in use and a special sand blasting system allows the
creation of beautifully structured surfaces. The pipes are offered without and
also with filter-chamber in order to satisfy every taste. Both pipe makers also
create custom-built pipes if the ideas are technically realisable. Personal
consultation in advance is available at any time.
Gerd Faßbänder
Gerd Fassbaender from Euskirchen-Roitzheim was born
in 1961 and started to craft pipes in 2005, like many pipe makers in an
autodidactic way. Being an independent craftsman in industrial gates building he
has abundant experience in dealing with materials and tools of all kind. Gerd
Fassbaender's pipes are mostly self-developed free forms, but he also offers
modified classic shapes. The molds are made up on the grinding wheel and with a
belt sander. The mouthpieces are made of high quality rod-materials by hand. A
special coloration method is his “Black Walnut”.
Heinz-Günter Döteberg
Heinz-Guenter Doeteberg from Stolberg (Rhineland) was
born in 1965 and started to make pipes in 2006 as a hobby. In the same year
Rainer Barbi crossed his way and invited him to his workshop followed by a
several days’ lasting most instructive workshop at Barbi’s place in May 2007.
The pipes of Heinz-Guenter Doeteberg are mainly based on classical shapes, but
he also likes to create free forms. The shapes are generated at the grinding
wheel and by hand. The mouthpieces are also handmade from high quality
rod-materials. His many years of experience as a chemist is reflected in various
techniques of colouring, particularly in a technique known as positive
staining.
