Welcome to Kohlhase & Kopp’s World of Tobacco Kohlhase was established in 1976. Three years later, in 1979, Michael Kohlhase and Bernd Kopp became business partners, and Kohlhase & Kopp was born. His singular intuition, his ardor for tobacco and the people he was working with, and not least his witty, unconventional style, made him stand out as a unique figure in the tobacco industry. to the Report >> |

Comparison of vintage tobacco vs. current versions The appearance of the tobaccos doesn’t differ very much: The vintage is somewhat darker, but overall similar to the current version. The cut is identically, too. By opening the tin a flashy smell, nearly as overripe tobacco, appears. But this slightly sweet smell evaporates rather quick and a spicy, by Latakia affected smell comes to the front. The tobacco seems to be a little bit less dampish, but in good condition at all. to the Report >> |

Sixten also was a very good teacher. One of Sixten's mottoes was, "It is a bad teacher who does not allow his student to become better than himself." Some pipe makers have directly had the pleasure to be taught by Sixten, while many more were inspired by his work. Pipe makers who were taught or guided by Sixten include prominent names like: his son Lars Ivarsson, Jorn Micke, Jess Chonowitsch, and Bo Nordh, but also Hiroyuki Tokutomi and other Japanese pipe makers... to the Report >> |

Josef Prammer Pipemaker Joseph Prammer, a toolmaker by trade, was born in 1953. Being a passionate pipe smoker, he began making pipes in 1993. What had started as a hobby, soon became his profession. Joseph Prammer briar pipes are exclusively made from high-quality Calabrian plateau briar. Joseph Prammer specially selects briar blocks whose grain is in harmony with the pipe’s shape. Of course, all of his pipes are free of putty. to the Report >> |
The suitability of sub fossil oak wood to build pipe bowls Some years ago I started experiments on sub fossil oak wood according to the ability to absorb moisture and about the heat conductivity because I always have been fascinated by the smoke quality of this wood. Furthermore I asked an analytical chemist to analyse this wood. I was astonished by the amount of minerals which were enclosed in certain samples. to the Report >> |

Eckhard Stöhr Goes to Stanwell Before buying briar and accessories, a task which had clearly shifted to the background this time, we took a factory tour. Probably for the last time… little tears couldn’t be choked back… to the Report >> |

A Visit To Poul Winsløw’s Workshop In August 2007 I visited Poul Winsløw in Denmark. After a hearty welcome with coffee and cake I could take a look at their property. First and foremost, my interest was sparked by Poul’s workshop. The house of Poul and Jette is located in a small housing estate with wonderful one bedroom houses. The first thing you see in the workshop is the staining station. to the Report >> |
About my grading system how and why It’s not an easy job to make the final grading of a pipe. A large number of details determine in which group the pipe will fit into, and you must know, that the grading system is not made with the purpose of giving the smoker a way to choose his pipe – but more as a system for the retailer to organize his inventory after. to the Report >> |

The Natural home of Hilson ...
The Dutch have the reputation of being astute and inventive, with a strong feeling for tradition and yet, at the same time, a modern approach to life. They are critical towards others but also set high standards for themselves. Whilst aspiring to quality and perfection without concessions, the Dutch are known as individualists: men and women with a will of their own, who pursue their own tastes with quiet assurance. to the Report >> |

Stanwell A/S In August 2007 I had the chance to visit Stanwell’s pipe factory in Borup, Denmark. On the way back from a visit to Poul Winsløw we stopped in Borup. The factory is located in a small industrial park. Stanwell’s manager Jørgen Grundtvig was already waiting for us when we arrived on the premises and gave us a hearty welcome. to the Report >> |
Production Before the real pipe making process can begin, every block is measured to find adequately sized blocks for each pipe shape. Then the briar blocks are put into these wooden boxes, whose labels designate their future shape. At this point the “fate” of each block has been determined, and it knows what it will become. to the Report >> |
Stanwell Museum It was Jørgen Grundtvig’s idea to establish a pipe museum at Stanwell’s. A “Pipe Of The Year”-Collection and an overview of all shapes that have ever been produced by Stanwell. Show is the six-pipe set created by Anne Julie, pipe-maker‘s design-proposal and Catalogues and Special Editions. to th Report >> |
