Manufacturer Description:
"The Balkan" is by the main components of Black Cavendish and Latakia a dark, warm mixture. The spicy and floral aroma obtained the blend by adding a generous portion of exotic Oriental tobaccos.
Characterisation:
The Balkans is a mixture of light to dark brown, and black varieties of tobacco. The tobacco is in the typical mixture cut with single torn leaf. The Balkans smells slightly sweet like dark chocolate, where Latakia is clearly noticeable but not dominant. The tobacco feels soft, but also contains a few hard stems. The Balkans is a little bit dampish, but still can be smoked without further preparation.
Plugging:
The Balkans could be - like most mixtures - stuffed very well. Due to the different cut widths and lengths, it is recommended to bring the loose tobacco in portions into the bowl and slightly press each layer with the tamper. The Balkans should be more loosely plugged, as it expands slightly during combustion. Too hard or too long stalks should possibly sort out before plugging.
Light up:
The Balkans tends to straighten up when lighting. Nevertheless it can be still good lighted up: With a first flame one could easily bring the surface to glow, and after gently press flat the surface with the tamper, one gets an uniform glow with a second flame.
Smoking properties:
After lighting The Balkans develop a slightly sweet taste that mingles with a sour-spicy flavour of the Oriental. Latakia is also to taste, but rather keeps in the background. The Balkans should be smoked with a little more attention in terms of the temperature, otherwise the Orient tends to bite on the tongue. Apart from that the handling is uncomplicated. The tobacco glows pretty evenly with some condensate, but may need a little more often pushed down with the tamper, when it was very loosely stuffed. Despite the compilation of Latakia and Oriental The Balkans is a light tobacco, which can be enjoyed at any time. After glowing down a light grey ash remains.
Redolency:
In the redolence one will notice the English character of the tobacco the most. In addition to the slightly sweetish Black Cavendish and the spicy Oriental here also the Latakia is more noticeable. But the scent is not overbearing and The Balkans should be welcome in the company of other smokers.
Conclusion:
The Balkans is a blend of brown and black tobaccos in typical mixture cut with some torn leaf and a few tougher stems. The tobacco can be handled easily, but should be smoked with a little attention in terms of the temperature, since otherwise the Orient tends to bite on the tongue. In smell and taste the sweet Black Cavendish and the Orient are more prominent - in the redolence also Latakia is more noticeable, but without being intrusive. The burn is even, where the tobacco must be subsequently pressed down a little more often if it’s stuffed very loose. Despite spicy tobaccos and Latakia The Balkans is light, what’s making it suitable for any occasion. The Black Cavendish tobacco takes some momentum, so that it can’t be recommended as an "all days". For lovers of uncomplicated English mixtures with some Latakia The Balkans is recommended for both experienced smokers and beginners.
