Characterisation:
As is customary for Mac Baren the HH Bold Kentucky is wrapped in gold paper. Also common is the almost perfect appearance of the narrow flakes. They are very accurately cut and stacked. Almost black with just a few golden speckles they refer as the dark earthy-smoky scent - only mitigated by a delicately spicy subtle sweetness - the promised and expected strength. The flakes feel slightly damp and very elastic. This makes it advisable to ventilate the fresh tobacco prior to plugging about ½ hour.
Plugging:
Mac Baren attaches particular importance that their flakes can be easily bent and folded. So also the HH Bold Kentucky, but it can be smoked also ground to a mixture of desired consistency, of course. As always loose, dry crumbs facilitate the acceptance of the flame at the surface of the filling.
Light up:
The HH Bold Kentucky should first be ignited, for then let it go off again. After smoothing with the tamper you give again evenly fire, pressing the filling gently down and the flake will burn until the end without any further claims.
Smoking properties:
The manufacturer advertises the HH Bold Kentucky as the strongest tobacco of the house and one would agree. Neither it is suitable for beginners or for the empty stomach or even rapid smokers. Smoked too quickly the heavy, thick smoke causes for carousel rides in the head and stomach... If you take time, but then it reveals its softer coatings. Massive, smoky, spicy it is thanks to the Kentucky used, also its peppery notes brings the tobacco to bear - in fact it tickles sometimes in the nose, as you know from this spice. In the background, but you can catch a whiff sweetness, nuttiness and bread flavors. The Virginia curbs here the impetuous urge of Kentucky. Actually, you only pay attention because of the strength on the HH Bold Kentucky to smoke slowly, because it burns so easily without gargling, tongue bite or getting hot, if that one might be tempted to smoke it alongside, but that it is better to leave and to reserve it rather than digestive and / or for the end of the day. Fine, light gray ash and barely condensate keep the cleaning effort as easy as the previous smoking process.
Redolency:
The room touch of HH Bold Kentucky is so fundamentally honest, as the tobacco itself - strong and unmistakable. So rather smoke alone or among peers. Also in the open air the flake does not quickly run out of steam, so it is perfect for a walk in cool conditions.
Conclusion:
The HH Bold Kentucky as usual for Mac Baren is worked and served with care. Its almost black colour and its dark flavor in the tin promise a vigorous smoking experience and you also get. Even its strength recommends HH Bold Kentucky for experienced smokers and rather small pipe volume; the flavors are intended for connoisseurs of stronger tobaccos. The HH Bold Kentucky has thoroughly honest tobacco flavor: Kentucky provides the base note with smoky, spicy, earthy flavors that the Virginia gently cushion with a fine sweetness and nutty bread aromas. No flake for any time, but a good conclusion to a lavish meal, an evening or for long walks in autumn and winter.
