Manufacturer Description:
Red Lion is a traditional unique English mixture. The typical smoky aroma comes from the fantastic Latakia which is combined with selected golden Virginia, aromatic Black Cavendish and sweet Greek Oriental Basma grades. A pipe tobacco to remember!
Characterisation:
The Red Lion is a mixture of mostly medium and darker brown tobaccos with a few brighter parts. The smell shows predominantly Latakia, but spicy tobaccos and a sweet nuance could be recognized too. The medium cut tobacco feels pleasing smooth but not dampish.
Plugging:
The tobacco could be plugged without any problem. Attention should be paid to plug not too compressed, to avoid that the tobacco overheats while burning down.
Light up:
It’s easy to light up the tobacco. After the first flame it tends a little bit to straighten up. Slightly dampened and flattened with the tamper a constant glow could be achieved with a second flame.
Smoking properties:
After light up the Red Lion immediately shows it’s English character. After the first draws the high amount of Latakia comes into it’s own. A lightly sweetness of Virginia and the other spicy tobaccos combine with the Latakia to a pleasing, nearly mild taste, but which could not hide the medium strength. Slowly and cool smoked, the Old Dublin develops it’s well-balanced taste. Thereby the tobacco glows with less condensate to a medium grey ash.
Redolency:
The redolence is typical smoky like spicy tobacco with Latakia. A mixture which is rather more recommended for like-minded people.
Conclusion:
A typical from Latakia dominated English tobacco, which develops due to it’s well-balanced mixture both spicy and sweet nuances. Pleasing, nearly mild in taste, but medium strong. Burning down and smoking properties are very good, what makes it easy to handle this mixture. The smoky-spicy redolence rather restricts the socially acceptability. The tobacco glows without much attention slowly and cool down to the end, whereby it builds less condensate. The medium strength advise the Red Lion for the second half of the day, as example the early evening or a warm summer night. For experienced smoker of English mixtures the Red Lion is a recommendation, beginner with this kind of tobaccos should be a little bit careful.
