Characterisation:
After opening of the rectangular tin the Original Navy Flake appears as rather large (7.5 x 4.5 cm), from light to dark brown mottled slices. The tobacco develops a slightly sweet, strong smell of ripe Virginias. The slices have a stable consistency with optimal humidity. The Original Navy Cut is a little darker and smells a little sweeter than the Gold Navy Cut, which is due to it's longer aging time.
Plugging:
The Original Navy Cut can be stuffed with different methods: Rubbed off and then as a Mixture or with the "buckling and folding method." Since the tobacco is relatively compact, it must be taken to ensure that it is not plugged too tightly because it expands a bit while smoking. One should also make sure that the top layer is distributed evenly, so that the tobacco can be light up easily.
Light up:
The Original Navy Cut can be light up easily with 1 to 2 flames. Depending of the plugging method the surface must be pressed down slightly with the tamper and then re-ignite with 1 to 2 flames. After that, the original Navy Cut glows evenly.
Smoking properties:
The Original Navy Cut is a typical mature Virginia flake. The sweet taste of tobacco is dominant and the strength is medium. Of course, also applies to the Original Navy Cut, it shouldn't be smoked too hot! Smoked thoughtfully it develops a rich, very smooth taste. The burn is even with some condensate. The remaining residual ash is dark gray.
Redolency:
The redolence of the Original Navy Cut is also influenced by the maturity of the tobacco. Sweet, strong tobacco smell, which is not obtrusive, but pleasantly as slightly flavored.
Conclusion:
The Original Navy Cut is a matured Virginia flake which was cut into rather large slices of firm consistency. The colour ranges from light to dark brown and the conditioning is optimal. The slightly longer maturity period of the Original Navy Cut develops a rich, sweet taste of tobacco. The handling is easy, although care must be taken that the tobacco is not smoked too hot. The burn is even with some condensate. The original Navy Cut is recommended for all smokers, who'll like pure Virginias of medium strength with a full taste.
