Manufacturer Description: Selected sweet Virginias with a small pinch of Perique and classically refined with Caribbean Rum were matured for a long time in the press. The result is a dark brown, full-bodied, light and sweet pipe tobacco in traditional way, which will take you on a pleasantly cool and soft smoking experience. Unlike an ordinary flake tobacco it was not sliced, but packaged in a brick as a true "Plug Tobacco". Enjoy it from pipes with smaller bowl.
Characterisation: In a well-designed pouch of the Salty Dogs comes as a small, compact block of pressed tobacco. This plug is black-brown with some golden inclusions in the cut surface. Its fragrance is tasty, but points with its fruity notes of dried fruit rather than of Caribbean rum. Then plug tobacco in the opened package barely dries out, so it is recommended to leave the taken slices to dry slightly before smoking.
Plugging: Compared to other plugs the Salty Dogs is very flexible and can be easily cut with a sharp knife. Plugs invite you to experiment and you should do so until you have found your preferred method of preparation. So you can cut small flakes of the desired thickness, this - if you want to - rub out into a Mixture or cutting the flakes in long strips and then crosswise into cubes and so get an own cube-cut. Then you can plug it according to their preparation, you should be careful not to plug too hard as the compressed tobacco tends to rise during kindling. A few incurred tobacco crumbs as the top layer facilitate the kindling.
Light up: If you have the Salty Dogs not plugged too tight, the tobacco can be ignited quite easily and keep on fire. After the first flame you can go with the tamper smoothing over the surface, then relighting and enjoy a uniform embers until the end of the filling.
Smoking properties: The Salty Dogs smokes after the expenses of the preparation, pleasantly uncomplicated. Even smoked avid it does not bite or gargle. Of course you should enjoy it comfortably, so it serves fruity-sweet flavor notes reminiscent no accident in rum-soaked raisins. Here the added flavor supports the natural flavors of the rather sweet Virginias, to which the pinch of Perique contributes a hint of spice. For a plug of tobacco it is quite mild and thus friendly to beginners. Back merely remains somewhat dark gray ash and a few unburned tobacco residues, causing together with the almost non-existent condensate, only little work in cleaning.
Redolency: The room note of the Salty Dogs is sweet and should not stand out in society, which feels not disgraced by typicall pipe smoke.
Conclusion: The Salty Dogs is a black and brown tobacco in shape of a plug. This shape assumes that the smoker takes a bit more elaborate preparation on what is possible thanks to the not so heavy pressure, with a little practice and enjoyment of experimenting. Stuffed with some care the Salty Dogs is to smoke easy and uncomplicated. Its pleasant aroma and for a plug tobacco unusual mildness make it an ideal entry-level tobacco for those who want to familiarize themselves with this very original form of tobacco and may shy away from the sometimes almost legendary strong twists and plugs. But for lovers of strong plugs which may sometimes desire a gentle pleasures, the Salty Dogs is just right.
