WHITE SPOT CENTENARY PIPE
COMPANION SET

THE WHITE SPOT
DOT

When Alfred Dunhill started to manufacture its
own pipes in 1910, he laid down that every pipe was to be fitted with a
hand-made Vulcanite or Cumberland mouthpiece for each individual bowl. Fitted
correctly, those mouthpieces are perfectly aligned to the stem.
From 1912 onwards a small white dot made from ivory
was inserted to mark the top of the mouthpiece, thus facilitating for the user
the correct re(positioning) of the mouthpiece onto the pipe to customers and
staff alike.
In addition to this practical function, the ‘White
Spot’ quickly became recognised as a silent, subtle symbol of sophistication, an
unostentatious sign that stood for the quality of a dunhill pipe, but also
communicated to a third party observer the superior taste of the owner’s choice
in product.
Thus, Alfred Dunhill’s White Spot
pipe was born and soon registered as the international
trademark.

Over the years, the size of the White Spot varied
slightly and from the early 1950’s onwards, due to changed legislation, the
ivory dot was replaced with white resin material.
Alfred Dunhill’s White Spot pipes continue to be the
most recognisable in the world and continue to set the standard in and for the
industry.
This Companion Set pipes have been specifically
created and manufactured as a limited edition to celebrate the Centenary of the
invention and introduction of Alfred Dunhill’s White Spot.

The set consists of:
• Limp Companion Case • Bruyere Billiard Gr.2
(2103) • Black Briar Billiard Gr.2 (2103) • 20 pipe

with celebratory inscription engraved.

Alfred Dunhill’s 1920’s catalogue.

It was manufactured in our London workshop and is
