Alfred Dunhill Christmas Pipe 1982
Your new
Dunhill should smoke sweet from the start, However, great care should be taken
to avoid overheating the bowl until a protective carbon layer has
formed. Smoked a new pipe quickly, out of doors or in a draught, will usually
cause overheatng.

Even the most seasoned briar tends to
expand and contract in response to its moisture content, and an excessice carbon
layer can lead to the bowl splitting. Therefore the carbon should be
maintained at approximately 1/16" thick by using a adjustable carbon cutter.
Never use a penknife or pointed implement which may pierce the bottom of the
bowl.

Your
pipe should be cleaned of liquid desposits before it becomes foul and "gummy".
Regular use of a dry, chenile pipe cleaner will help keep your pipe sweet and
clean. However, if a more thorough cleaning is required, moisten the end of the
pipe cleaner in spirit or special pipe cleaner lotion to dissolve the tobacco
deposits.

Broken mouthpiece pegs and split stems
often result from trying to remove a tight mouthpiece from a warm pipe or by
knocking out a pipe an a hard surface. To avoid this, hold the briar stem and
knock the cool bowl against the palm of the hand. Loose mouthpieces are often
caused by high moisture content of the briar, caused by "wet" smoking and can be
best avoided by using a pipe cleaner after every smoke.
