Characterisation:
The Mallard is a Ready Rubbed, consisting of slim-cutted, but longer bits of flakes. It is generally medium brown, with some darker and lighter proportions. Typical of pure Virginias the tobacco smells of hay with a slight fruity sweetness in the background. In the tin The Mellow Mallard seems to be a bit damp, but is so well conditioned that it can be plugged immediately.
Plugging:
The Mallard can be easily accommodated in the pipe. Depending on the pipe size, it may only be necessary to grind larger bits of flake smaller. Stuff not too tightly, because pressed tobacco generally tends to rise under the flame. Loose tobacco fibers and crumbs on top of the filling are well suited to take the flame quickly.
Light up:
Despite a certain residual moisture to The Mallard can easily be ignited. After two flames and in between once smoothing with the tamper the tobacco burns comfortably and makes no further work.
Smoking properties:
Despite its gentle name The Mallard surprises with a lush smoke, which also comes yet neat spicy. Here, the tobacco does its name still all honor, it is very mild, you have - unlike some other pure Virginias - neither fear tongue bite nor gargling. It also has a very clear taste profile: smoky, quite hearty, yet pleasant natuarlly sweet, suggesting a high sugar Virginia. The thickness is between light and medium, which makes the tobacco never burdensome and its other smoking properties demand little attention. So it is also with the subsequent cleaning, in which only light gray fine ash with very few unburned crumbs and almost no condensate occurs.
Redolency:
In the room the smell of The Mallard is tobacco genuine and weak sweetish and could therefore meet in society on tolerance.
Conclusion:
The Mallard is a Ready Rubbed in all shades of brown. Different to as the name suggests, provides the "gentle duck" a surprisingly lush, spicy yet mild sweet smoke but not yet overwhelming in taste and in strength. Its preparation and smoke characteristics make it suitable for beginners. Just who once would like to try a pure Virginia or a Ready Rubbed will find in The Mallard an appropriate tobacco. Even experienced smokers will appreciate the simplicity of The Mallard as tobacco for any occasion.
