Old Joe Krantz
Dark and cube-cut Burley in combination with tart Red Virginia Ribbon and spicy St. James Perique presents itself here as a gentle-smoking Burley mixture. Another creation of Bob Runowski and named in honor of the man who taught Bob how to smoke a pipe: It was Old Joe Krantz, his grandfather.
Characterisation:
The Old Joe Krantz is packaged in the company's signature small round tin, closed with a ring-pull closure and a plastic lid. For longer storage, you should transfer the tobacco to an airtight container. The cut is rather wide, the fibers are fawn and light brown. The scent is sweet and fruity, with a hint of nuts, which is unusual for a perique-containing blend. Since the tobacco has a balanced moisture content, it can easily be plugged straight from the tin.
Plugging:
Due to the wide cut of the Old Joe Krantz, it is advisable not to pack the tobacco too tightly and to give it some space in the pipe. It shouldn't be too small either. Then, as usual, you can plug loosely at the bottom and carefully tighten it towards the top.
Light up:
The Old Joe Krantz can easily be lit because it is not too moist. After the first flame, press lightly with the tamper and then use the second flame to create an even glow.
Smoking properties:
As could already be smelled in the cold scent of Old Joe Krantz, you can taste a very clear aroma of nuts. For a tobacco without casing, this impression is an unusual but pleasant surprise. There are also earthy undertones and hints of leather, which together with smoky roasted notes create an interesting combination of taste impressions. Carefully plugged, the Old Joe Krantz burns inconspicuously, but - as with so many Virginia-containing tobaccos - you should be careful not to smoke too greedily. If this is successful, gargling is avoided, so that in the end only some dark ash and a little condensate remain.
Redolency:
The room note of Old Joe Krantz is natural, slightly stronger due to the perique it contains, so you should be considerate of non-smoking company.
Conclusion:
The Old Joe Krantz is a reddish-brown blend that requires a little attention in preparation as well as when smoking. If you keep this in mind, you will be rewarded with an interesting flavor profile. For a natural tobacco, Old Joe Krantz delivers a surprisingly intense aroma of nut. The slightly earthy leather and roasted notes make the smoking varied. The Old Joe Krantz can appeal to smokers of flavored tobaccos as well as those who want to try a Virginia-Perique blend. But those who regularly smoke blends of this type will also appreciate the variety.
