Redwood
This exquisite tobacco blend features the finest sun-ripened Virginia tobaccos, which provide a natural sweetness. A carefully balanced proportion of Latakia lends the blend a gentle smokiness, while dark Cavendish adds a pleasant depth and smoothness. The aroma is rounded off with a touch of spicy Oriental tobaccos, which add a subtle, exotic note. The tobacco leaves are gently pressed and processed into a loose broken flake, making packing easier and ensuring an even burning. A subtle hint of cocoa adds extra warmth and sensuality to this blend.
Characterisation:
Once the pull-tab lid of the Two Friends Redwood is opened, the tin can be resealed with the additional plastic lid. However, for longer storage, the open tobacco should be kept in a securely airtight container. Beneath the wrapper leaf is a medium-width, short-cut, very loose broken flake. Its color ranges from fawn to medium to dark brown. The aroma doesn't betray the oriental tobaccos it contains. However, a cocoa aroma is also present, along with something reminiscent of cake and a vague alcoholic note. Two Friends Redwood tobacco contains very little residual moisture, so it can be used immediately after opening the tin.
Plugging:
The low residual moisture content and loose cut of the tobacco make it easy to pour the Two Friends Redwood into the pipe. A gentle tamping at the end creates a good fill.
Light up:
Here too, the loose cut and low residual moisture content prove advantageous. The Two Friends Redwood readily accepts the first flame. The second flame then produces an even ember on the surface smoothed with the tamper.
Smoking properties:
As promised by the manufacturer, the aromatic cocoa remains in the background. Two Friends Redwood is predominantly a typical English tobacco, delivering the robust smoke one would expect. The Latakia exhibits a spicy character, while the Virginia offers a rustic flavor reminiscent of toasted bread. A woody note harmonizes well, and the aroma is slightly sweet. The oriental tobaccos keep the smoke cool. The burning is also unobtrusive and relaxed. Cleaning is straightforward, as very little condensation and only a small amount of light, flaky ash remain in the pipe.
Redolency:
While the room fragrance of Two Friends Redwood isn't overwhelmingly strong, its temperate aroma barely masks the tobacco's natural scent. Therefore, consideration should be given to non-smokers.
Conclusion:
The company's signature small, round tin contains a fine, light to dark brown broken flake tobacco that is easy to plug and light, even for beginners. However, some experience with English blends is recommended, as this tobacco is rather strong. Despite the subtle cocoa flavor, Two Friends Redwood comes across as a natural English blend. Spicy Latakia, a Virginia with toasted bread aromas, and woody notes accompany the robust smoke, which is only subtly sweetened by a hint of cocoa. Two Friends Redwood can certainly be enjoyed anytime, even casually, as it requires little attention while smoking. However, its spiciness makes it particularly suitable for later in the day.
