Characterisation:
Sligo Bay comes in a round tin wrapped in a paper rosette. Beneath the wrapper is a fine, light brown ready rubbed tobacco. Even the cold aroma reveals the Irish character of the tobacco: it is sweet and reminiscent of a pleasantly perfumed soap. Since the ready rubbed tobacco has a slightly dry feel, Sligo Bay can be transferred to an airtight container for longer storage. Pre-drying is therefore unnecessary – Sligo Bay can be used immediately after opening the tin.
Plugging:
Sligo Bay's fine Ready Rubbed tobacco is easy to pack. Starting loosely at the bottom and finishing with light pressure results in a good filling that smokes just as easily.
Light up:
The low residual moisture content of Sligo Bay ensures good flame acceptance. The tamper is only used to smooth the surface, allowing for an even relight. The resulting embers then last until the end of the pipe.
Smoking properties:
Sligo Bay caresses the palate with its typically Irish aroma. This was already evident in the pre-light aroma, which is intense and sweet, reminiscent of fine perfumed soap, yet not overpowering or artificial. The flavors range from almonds and wax to floral notes, creating an interesting and flavorful smoking experience. The smoke is otherwise uncomplicated and not overpowering. The few unburned crumbs and a little medium-gray ash make cleaning the pipe easy. However, it's worth considering reserving a pipe for this tobacco, as a slight aftertaste can linger, or other tobaccos could potentially influence its flavor profile.
Redolency:
The aroma of Sligo Bay lends the room an almost pleasant fragrance. Even non-smokers are hardly bothered by it. Of course, consideration should still be shown.
Conclusion:
Sligo Bay is a fine, light brown ready-rubbed tobacco packaged in a round tin. Even the pre-light aroma hints at a typical Irish-flavored tobacco. And indeed, the smoke reveals the sweet, perfumed, almost soapy aromas so prized by connoisseurs. While the smoke isn't overwhelmingly strong, the aroma is intense without being overpowering. A waxy smoothness blends with floral notes, and the base tobacco also shines through with the nuttiness of mild almonds. Both the preparation and the smoking experience are perfectly suited for beginners. However, Sligo Bay is also aimed at smokers who already have some experience with Irish blends. Or perhaps you're curious and decide to go all in – Sligo Bay won't disappoint.
