Manufacturer Description:

Fully ripe Virginia provenance gives this Cavendish its fine sweetness thanks to double fermentation. A 2.7mm wide cut ensures an even, cool burn. Black, gentle and fragrant.

Characterisation:
In a round tin, wrapped in a paper rosette and covered with a cover sheet, lie the shiny black-brown fibers of Black Cavendish No 1, cut quite short and wide. The mildly sweet scent is surprisingly reminiscent of that of a good black tea and whets the appetite to taste the smoke. The moisture content is so well balanced that you can plug Black Cavendish No 1 immediately after opening the tin.

Plugging:
The short cut of the Black Cavendish No 1 is relatively easy to plug. However, you should not let this seduce you into becoming careless. You should deliberately put the Black Cavendish No 1 loosely at the bottom of the pipe that is not too small and then gently tighten it towards the top with feeling.

Light up:
Black Cavendish No 1 also requires some attention when lighting. After the first flame, you should definitely smooth the surface carefully with the tamper before lighting the fire again. It may take two to three flames to create an even bed of embers.

Smoking properties:
The Black Cavendish No 1 has a surprisingly diverse aroma for a pure Cavendish tobacco. At first it is surprisingly smoky and spicy, and there are also hints of juicy bread - the underlying, selected Virginias are probably responsible for this. The fermentation process then added a sweet component to which a fine acidity gives it the necessary rounding. If you breathe consciously, you will be reminded of caramel and vanilla. Since it takes some skill to keep the tobacco so cool, it may occasionally require another flame to keep the Black Cavendish No 1 smoldering. The burning is otherwise so uncomplicated that only a few unburned crumbs and some dark gray ash remain. This makes cleaning less complicated.

Redolency:
Known as a component of flavored blends, Cavendishes are not considered severe tobaccos, but the Black Cavendish No 1 is not flavored, so sensitive noses could find the natural smoke disturbing. This means being considerate of non-smokers.

Conclusion:
Black Cavendish No 1, unsurprisingly for this type of tobacco, has shiny black-brown leaves. The short and wide fibers require a little more care than one might imagine. But smoking the tobacco is relatively relaxed. Strong smoky spice combines with bread aromas familiar from Virginias. A hint of acidity combined with subtle sweetness evokes associations of vanilla caramel toffee. It is important to remember that this complexity was achieved through just one type of tobacco and its careful fermentation. You should appreciate and enjoy this, then the Black Cavendish No 1 will automatically be smoked as cool and attentive as it deserves.
