Manufacturer Description:
Named after a disused sailing ship (Pinnasse) that once lay on the Elbe beach in St. Pauli (today "Pinnasberg") and housed a popular tourist restaurant until the end of the 19th century. Soft Virginia and Burley origins, a pinch of Kentucky and some Black Cavendish, a gentle blend with a slightly sweet bouquet. Broad cut portions allow it to smolder slowly and cool. Old Pinnas offers uncomplicated, pleasantly fragrant enjoyment.
Characterisation:
As soon as the aluminum lid of the Alter Pinnas is opened, the small round tin can be closed again with the plastic lid provided. If you don't use up the tobacco so quickly, an airtight container is more suitable for longer storage. The mixture is made up of light, medium and dark brown tobaccos, which fill the tin as fibers and cube cuts. The slightly sweet scent is reminiscent of biscuits with raisins, so it is very appetizing. Since the Alter Pinnas contains a trace of residual moisture, you can let it dry for a few minutes before plugging it.
Plugging:
Despite the different cuts, the Alter Pinnas can be easily filled. The pipe should not be too small so that the pressed cubes can unfold, but in principle you can proceed as usual: loosely at the bottom and gently getting tighter towards the top.
Light up:
The Alter Pinnas is also easy to light if you have let it dry for a short time. After the first flame, you only need to smooth the surface a little with the tamper before lighting it again and creating an even glow.
Smoking properties:
The Alter Pinnas is as rustic as its name. Its smoky, spicy flavours envelop the palate and you can immediately feel its astringent effect. The "pinch" of Kentucky may already be responsible for this comprehensive impression. But you can also taste woody notes and dark roasted aromas, as you know from Burley and some Virginias. Interestingly, the Alter Pinnas brings out the fine sweetness of the Cavendish especially when you keep it smoldering gently. However, you may have to light it again. It's a game that's worth playing, but it takes a bit of experience. After an otherwise completely unremarkable burn, all that remains is some dark, coarse ash and a few unburned crumbs. Cleaning it is therefore quite easy.
Redolency:
Since Alter Pinnas is more like a natural tobacco, sensitive noses may find it unpleasant. Non-smokers should therefore be taken into consideration.
Conclusion:
The Alter Pinnas is as unpretentious as an old sea dog, even if the mixture of fibers and cube cuts in the various shades of brown seems relatively modern. So it is hardly surprising that Kentucky and Burley - despite their moderate strength - contribute clearly smoky, spicy aromas, hints of wood and dark roasted notes. Only those who manage to smoke the Alter Pinnas cool will be rewarded with the soft core in the supposedly rough shell: a gently sweet treat for the palate that knows how to round off the tart notes wonderfully. It does take a bit of experience to keep the tobacco just smoldering, but it is worth practicing with the Alter Pinnas!

In order to achieve these, the raw briar blocks from which the pipe is created,
needs th be cut along the natural grain course.
Tip number 4
Sandblasting makes the most of the grain of the pipe
A pipe bowl which has a beautiful grain but with inherent imperfections is sandblasted.
In the process the softer parts of the surface are washed out the harder relief.
The advantages are, as with rusticated pipes, a greater ruggedness and a cooler smoking pleasure.
