The Alfred Dunhill Longitude Pipe

The world revolves once every 24 hours; there are 360 degrees to each rotation, therefore the world turns one degree of longitude every four minutes. If your longitude is known, then so is your position upon the globe.

Global time is measured against that of 0° Longitude – the line of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, built in 1675 by Sir Christopher Wren (designer of St Paul´s Cathedral in London) upon the orders of Charles II.

A clockmaker, John Harrison, conquered the problem of establishing longitude with the invention of the marine chronometer which accurately told the time at sea. Sailors set their chronometers at the start of time ball. Each day at 12:55, the ball rose half way up its mast; at 12:58 it rose to the top. At 13:00 exactly, the ball fell, and so provided a visual signal to both those on the river, and on land. This red ball continues to rise and fall to this day.

To celebrate the Millennium, Alfred Dunhill has created a pipe with a calibrated calculator that can compare the different times at which the millennium will occur relative to local time in the major cities, to be found in world time zones.

This Alfred Dunhill Longitude Pipe forms one of limited edition of 2000 and is a group 5 Shell Billiard with a stainless steel rim mount and gold plated rotating bezel with a red dot to indicate the millennium zone.

Instructions for use

The calculator can be used in three different ways:

1. To find the time in another city when the millennium hour is reached in your own time zone, i.e. when the millennium takes place in Moscow, what time is it in San Francisco?
2. To find when other cities are in the millennium hour relative to your own local time zone, i.e. when it is 09:00 in London, which city will be celebrating the millennium hour?
3. To compare the local times of cities in different time zone, i.e. when it is 07:00 in New York, what is the time in Moscow?

Method

1. (i)  Align the Red millennium dot below the city of your time zone, i.e. Red dot below “Moscow”
   (ii) Read the hour of day in the other cities directly below on the lower time ring, i.e. read time below “San Francisco” (which is 13:00)
2. (i)  Align your local time on the lower time ring with your corresponding city, i.e. align “London” with 09:00 on the time ring.
   (ii) Read the city which is in the millennium hour immediately above the Red dot, i.e. Anchorage.
3. (i)  Align the first city with its actual local time, i.e. “New York” above 07:00.
   (ii) Read the time below the second city on the time ring, i.e. 15:00 below “Moscow”

Note: All times are related to Greenwich Meantime during the Northern Hemisphere Winter, therefore, due to daylight saving adjustments, some cities will need their time adjusted by the suffix indicated during Summertime.
