Under the microscope I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty and it seemed a shame that the beauty should not be seen and appreciated by other. Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted the design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone without leaving any record behind.
Wilson A. Bentley
It was in 1885 that Wilson Alwyn Bentley became the first person to successfully photograph snow crystals more commonly known as snowflake.
A brilliant, unique individual - largely self taught - Bentley was born in a Vermont farmhouse which remained his lifelong home.
Through remarkable determination and vision he became a gifted pioneering scientist and photographer, passionately dedicated to capturing and sharing nature´s beauty, mystery and magnificent design as seen in snow crystals.
The 2005 Alfred Dunhill Christmas Pipe Shell Briar 4325 from a Limited Edition of 400 Fitted with an 18ct Rose Gold 10mm band stamped with a snowflake design in recognition of the work by Wilson A. Bentley 120 years ago.
