Villiger 1888 Nicaragua The New Star in the Cigar Sky from VILLIGER in Nicaragua How it All Began... The Swiss-German tobacco company of Heinrich Villiger celebrated a grand event in Switzerland in September 2008: the 120th anniversary of the company founded by his grandmother in 1888. For this special occasion, the traditional house's first own premium cigar, named VILLIGER 1888, was launched. This cigar was produced in the Dominican Republic from perfectly aged tobaccos, with the active participation of patron Heinrich Villiger, who was responsible for the blend's composition. The result: medium-bodied cigars that impress with their rich bouquet. Fourteen years later – in 2022 – and with the VILLIGER 1888 Dom. Rep. having long established itself as a high-quality cigar brand in Germany and internationally, a new VILLIGER 1888 line is being launched: the VILLIGER 1888 Nicaragua. It should be noted that since October 2021, VILLIGER has been operating its own state-of-the-art handmade cigar factory in Estelí, the Mecca of the cigar industry in Nicaragua.
Already in the last century, Nicaragua had increasingly developed in the production of handmade cigars. This development also went hand in hand with the increasing expansion of tobacco plantations on excellent soils under ideal climatic conditions at the beginning of the 2000s. Thus, Estelí increasingly became the Mecca of Nicaragua's cigar industry and an ideal location for Heinrich Villiger's expansion plans. The proximity to the world's most important handmade cigar market, the USA, also contributed to the decision-making process. What could be more natural than to develop a second VILLIGER 1888 line, especially since VILLIGER can now control and monitor the entire production process (from raw tobacco purchasing to rolling) themselves. The most important elements in conceiving a new brand or line are the composition of the tobaccos, which ultimately determine the strength, aroma, as well as the draw, burn, and thus the taste. This is where the experts from VILLIGER DE NICARAGUA and VILLIGER Söhne Germany were called upon. The selection of high-quality tobaccos from Nicaragua is vast: Condega Seco, rather medium-bodied with coffee aromas; Jalapa Viso, medium-bodied with bread aromas and a smooth smoke; Estelí Ligero, a rather strong tobacco with pepper aromas. After the composition of various tobaccos and extensive smoker panels in Germany with up to 70 individual test results, it ultimately became a highly exciting tobacco composition. Character: Medium-bodied tobaccos that offer a pleasantly aromatic smoking experience without becoming sharp or peppery. Taste: Cool and palatable in expression, with hints of chocolate and honey.
