Perla del Mar The history of the J.C. Newman Cigar Company dates back to 1895, when Julius Caeser Newman rolled his first cigar in a barn in Cleveland, Ohio, after his family had emigrated from Austria-Hungary to America. Later, the company relocated to Tampa, Florida, where it remains to this day—now in its fourth generation of family ownership—making it the oldest family-owned premium cigar manufacturer in the United States. Perla del Mar is a historic cigar brand with roots in Cuba. In 1905, four Cuban brothers began rolling cigars using tobacco grown on their family farm. They named the cigars “Perla del Mar”—a heartfelt tribute to their island homeland. As the popularity and demand for their cigars grew, the brothers moved to Tampa into a building next to J.C. Newman. Perla del Mar later became part of the Newman family’s portfolio and by the early 20th century, had become one of the leading premium cigar brands in the United States. The new Perla del Mar cigars, still traditionally packaged in wooden boxes and crafted in the soft box-pressed "Tampa-style", are now rolled at PENSA in Nicaragua. They return to the international market with a completely reworked blend, staying true to their legacy while offering a modern experience.
