Characterisation:
The large round tin of No. 2 contains the well-conditioned tobacco wrapped in a paper rosette; consequently, the top layer is completely dry. Beneath lies a blend of short black-brown and longer dark-brown tobacco strands, interspersed with light-colored flakes. The sweet aroma, with its slight alcoholic note, is reminiscent of fruity pastries. Once the tin is opened, No. 2 can be given directly into the pipe.
Plugging:
The No. 2 is easy to plug. Simply place the tobacco loosely into the pipe and press it down more firmly as you work your way up.
Light up:
Thanks to the balanced residual moisture content of No. 2, the tobacco is easy to light. After the initial flame, simply smooth the tobacco with a tamper and use a second flame to establish an even ember.
Smoking properties:
Despite the added flavoring—which is clearly perceptible in the fruity aroma of the unlit tobacco—No. 2 presents a profile that remains true to the tobacco itself. It starts off smoky, and the base tobaccos can actually be distinguished: the Virginia reveals notes of hay and toasted bread, while the Burley contributes hints of nuttiness. The Black Cavendish carries the flavoring, though it remains noticeable primarily in the background during a gentle smoke. At such times, the smoke carries sweet and floral nuances that become particularly apparent when exhaling through the nose. After an even, trouble-free burn, only a bit of light, flaky ash remains, making cleanup effortless.
Redolency:
Since No. 2 is an aromatic blend, it is not unpleasantly overpowering in the room, yet the base tobaccos remain perceptible. It is therefore worth considering non-smokers with sensitive noses.
Conclusion:
The predominantly dark tobacco strands might suggest that the No. 2’s flavor profile when smoked differs from its sweet aroma in the tin. In reality, this tobacco—easy to prepare and smoke—reveals a rather spicy character. Virginia and Burley show their expected notes of hay, toasted bread, and nuts.
