"This flake was really a discovery for me: almost black, with wonderfully strong tarry smell. And when smoking ... How incomparably gentle! To my surprise, the spicy taste was accompanied by the clear sweet note I like so much at pure Virginia flakes. The secret: by co-pressing of natural sweet Virginia and smoky Latakia this exceptionally rich flavor develops. " Holger Frickert.
In the company's typical round tin the Holly's Discovery lies as a crumbly and rather dry flake, which is typical for DTM also. This results from the consistent refusal of the company to "adhesives", what benefits the quality, however, makes the removal of individual flakes somewhat difficult. The flakes are very uniform in composition marbled pale-, medium - and black-brown and give off a scent immediately noticeable of smoky Latakia, but with a sweetness of rum and spice reminiscent of anise. The flake can be filled immediately.
The Holly's Discovery is not very elastic, but can be bent and folded with some caution thoroughly. With its crumbly it is ideally suited to be formed into a loose ball placed in the pipe or one grinds it to a Ready.Rubbed-Mixture. One should let the compressed tobacco a little room for development in the pipe, and also a few loose tobacco crumbs uppermost facilitate Igniting immensely.
The Holly's Discovery requires like most Flakes two flames. Let it go out only once, smoothen the surface with the tamper and resubmit evenly fire, then Holly's Discovery burns undemanding.
To smoke the Holly's Discovery greedy forbits because of its strength, but done so it tends to gargle. Smoked slowly the Holly's Discovery rewarded this mindfulness with a lush smoke, for the adjectives, as seems to have been invented "creamy" and "smooth as silk". Attributes, as they seldom used for mixtures with Latakia. The Latakia clearly delivers the spiciness, but it has here not the usual incense-like overtones, but gives a mild spicy base that is vaguely reminiscent of dark chocolate and under which the fine wholemeal-bread note and apricot sweetness of Virginia hides. A very harmonious interaction, almost confusing. No true English mixture you would be tempted to say, and yet the Latakia is so basic that you can not deny it; but yet it is never obtrusive. Its strength, increasing somewhat during smoking, it does not necessarily recommended for the morning or the empty stomach, but is not overwhelming. After the tasteing this, there is only fine gray ash and very little condensate, if you have smoked slowly.
The room touch of Holly's Discovery is natural, it is strong and will be considered non-smoking society as a challenge ... However, it is due to its strength well as tobacco for outdoors, since it there does not lose its strength.
The Holly's Discovery is not as dark as one might expect in his hearty smell of Latakia. The crumbly flake is marbled in shades of brown evenly and can be stuffed immediately. Its strength and the need to calm smoking, recommends it to more experienced smokers, but also motivated beginners get on with it. It is worth this attention, because the Holly's Discovery surprises with an - unusual for English tobacco - softness. In fact, the mild-spicy smoke reminds of bitter chocolate cream, while the Virginia contributes the sweetness. Many lovers of English tobaccos may be confused; many Virginia fans as well. The former might be disappointed, because their expectations are not met, the latter might be surprised that them like the taste of a dark Latakia: an unusual tobacco. Unusually good!
