Manufacturer Description:
A high-contrast blend based on gold-yellow Virginia and light brown Burley tobaccos of the best growing areas. Balanced and fine-aromatic in taste. 1.6mm, cut short and in long fibers.
Characterisation:
The Mayflower No. 1 is packed in a round tin and when opened it appears as a medium brown Mixture with dark brown parts, which are also interspersed with lighter fibers. The fibers overall are long and frizzy and exude a slightly smoky-sweet, alcoholic scent. When removing from the tin, the tobacco looks a bit sticky, so it should be allowed to dry for a good hour in the air before plugging.
Plugging:
The Mayflower No. 1 should not be plugged too loose, but if you take this into account, you proceed as usual with loose Mixtures, that you start looser (only just with a little more pressure than usual) and get firmer towards the top.
Light up:
The lighting of the Mayflower No. 1 does not require much attention. You may need to gently press the smoldering surface with the tamper again and evenly give fire again, but then the tobacco burns reliably.
Smoking properties:
The Mayflower No. 1 is rich and mild-spicy in the pipe, but at the same time smoky and neither too weak nor too strong. In addition to the tobacco spice, a strong toasted bread note and natural sweetness are to taste, which combine wonderfully with the creamy smoke. If these flavors are attributed mainly to the outstanding Virginia, the contained Burley makes itself clearly noticeable with its typical nuttiness, which also harmoniously fits into the overall picture of taste. The only thing left are some medium gray ash and little condensate, which makes the cleaning quite pleasing.
Redolency:
The redolence of the Mayflower No. 1 is for tobacco and requires a society tolerant to smokers.
Conclusion:
The predominantly medium brown Mixture of Mayflower No. 1 surprises with a cold scent that makes you think of both Latakia and an aroma. Neither the one nor the other is included in the Mixture and yet the tobacco provides a surprisingly wide range of flavors from creamy lushness to smoky-spicy notes, as well as nutty, sweet and toast-like notes. Since you like to see that the plugging should be attentive, otherwise the burn-off is perfect and the Mayflower No. 1 therefore a tobacco for every occasion, which is also suitable for beginners, who appreciate a very well balanced composition.
