Josef Prammer - Pipemaker

Josef Prammer

Joseph Prammer, a toolmaker by trade, was born in 1953. Being a passionate pipe smoker, he began making pipes in 1993. What had started as a hobby, soon became his profession.

Hobbies:
He likes to take long walks with his wife in the beautiful Austrian landscape. Besides making pipes he also repairs them for Austrian pipe shops. Looking at his pipes, you can see that his training as a toolmaker pays off, as they are characterized by exceptionally diligent workmanship and great accuracy.

Briar pipes:
Joseph Prammer briar pipes are exclusively made from high-quality Calabrian plateau briar. Joseph Prammer specially selects briar blocks whose grain is in harmony with the pipe’s shape. Of course, all of his pipes are free of putty.

The grading for briar pipes:

C:
Sandblasted or rusticated, sometimes with spots, the grain is not too fine or not in harmony with the pipe’s shape.

D:
Beautiful to very beautiful grain, some small spots are possible.

E:
Exceptionally beautiful, fine grain without spots.

EE:
Exceptionally beautiful, very fine grain without spots. Very rare, about one out of fifty or more pipes.

Pipes made from fossil oak wood (bog oak):

Since 1997, Joseph Prammer produces pipes from this extraordinary wood. Thus, Joseph Prammer has gained a lot of experience concerning the handling of this material. He knows how to create a bog oak pipe with great smoking capabilities.

The bog oak Joseph Prammer selects for his pipes has to meet the following requirements:

1:
A natural grey/black colour. The high tannic acid content of oak wood and the acidic environment of the bog are responsible for the dark colour.

2:
The bog oak must not be too light. A density of 0,77 – 0,9 gr./cm³ is just right. To reach this density, the wood must not only have lain in a certain depth, but also in an appropriate environment. A high compression sustained over thousands of years is needed, so that earth or muck can saturate the wood, which is thus enriched with silicate.

Joseph Prammer’s bog oak pipes come without grading.

Benefits of a Joseph Prammer bog oak pipe:

No influence on the taste of the tobacco.

Very high absorption of tar (tobacco smoke condensate).

Exceptionally accurate and affectionate workmanship.

Joseph Prammer also produces bog oak pipes with briar inlaid bowls. For these pipes he uses slightly lighter bog oak which contains less silicate.
