Gawith & Hoggarth Kendal Dark Kendal Dark by Gawith & Hoggarth is a masterful blend of dark roasted Malawi and air-dried Indian Virginia tobaccos. This strong tobacco develops creamy, woody and smoky aromas, accompanied by a subtle sweetness and spice. Ideal with a morning coffee, it offers an intense taste experience. For smokers who are not used to higher nicotine levels, caution is advised - this tobacco has it all!
Characterisation: The rectangular box of Kendal Dark is also sealed with a plastic band. The cover cardboard shows a nice, old engraving of the tobacco factory. Underneath, wrapped in wax paper, is a fine, long and frizzy cut of medium and dark brown tobacco. The scent is slightly alcoholic, sweet and smoky at the same time. Since the Kendal Dark feels a bit clammy, you should let it pre-dry a little.
Plugging: The curly cut of the Kendal Dark requires attention when plugging. The pipe should not be too small and should not be filled too tightly. However, if you proceed loosely and use only gentle pressure, you will get a filling that will cause few difficulty.
Light up: Since the Kendal Dark is made of curly, long fibers, you should spread the flame thoroughly over it, then gently press it again with the tamper before the second flame creates a final ember.
Smoking properties: The Kendal Dark lives up to its name. For a pure Virginia, this tobacco has an unusual dark taste. Natural sweetness and hay aromas are only noticeable in the background. Distinct peat and leather notes, on the other hand, suggest Scottish whisky - as suggested by the cold scent. The smokiness of Kendal Dark is even more reminiscent of an English blend, and sometimes the taste also evokes wintry associations of oak wood smoldering in the fireplace. Since Kendal Dark is a strong tobacco, you should not smoke it carelessly or hastily. However, problems like other pure Virginias sometimes cause are not to be expected from the Kendal Dark. It smokes its way down uncomplicatedly until all you're left with at the end is a little medium gray ash.
Redolency: Since Kendal Dark is a strong and natural tobacco, which is also reflected in the smoke, you should be considerate of non-smokers.
Conclusion: The Kendal Dark is a curly, rather dark tobacco and its aroma is also dark. You could almost mistake him for a spicy Englishman. One should have some experience in handling strong tobaccos in general and in preparing stubborn, frizzy cuts in particular. The Kendal Dark rewards attention with an uncomplicated burning. Smoky notes are reminiscent of a winter fireplace and some people may be reminded of a good, rich Scotch by the associated peat and leather aromas. Whether you should smoke Kendal Dark in the morning hours - as recommended by the manufacturer - is of course up to you. In any case, it is ideal especially for the evening, after a good meal or with coffee and certainly with the drink that it taste is reminiscent of.
