Pirate Kake
The premium blend from the Sea Scoundrels series, the Pirate Kake, presents itself as a bold and robust English mixture. It consists of over 75% premium Latakia and is harmoniously complemented by additions of Turkish tobacco and Burley. A true delight for Latakia enthusiasts.
Characterisation:
The Pirate Cake is packaged in the company's typical small round tin. Despite the additional plastic lid, the tin with ring-pull closure is no longer airtight after it is opened for the first time. You should store the tobacco in another tightly sealing container for a longer period of time. The square, thumb-high cake is also wrapped in cardboard. Dark brown with light, light marbling, the Pirate Cake is somewhat reminiscent of a pumpernickel. The scent, on the other hand, is penetratingly spicy and smoky and evokes associations with glowing autumn leaves. On average, the tobacco is very compact and at the same time friable. So you don't have to pre-dry it before stuffing it.
Plugging:
Before plugging, the Pirate Cake must be cut. A stable and sharp knife and a suitable surface are essential for this. This means that crumbly flakes can be cut from the compact tobacco block. With a little skill, these can be given bent and folded into the pipe. However, it doesn't harm the tobacco if you crush it further to suit your taste. The Pirate Cake invites you to experiment. Unusually for a compressed tobacco, the Pirate Cake can and should be plugged a little tighter. Also in smaller pipes.
Light up:
As unusual as the preparation of the tobacco for plugging is, the Pirate Cake is lit in a classic way: After the first flame, you lightly smooth the surface with the tamper and then use the second flame to create an even glow.
Smoking properties:
You can also taste what you could already smell in the cold scent of the Pirate Cake. The tobacco is smoky and latakia-spicy. It also tastes very strong in terms of nicotine content, but the Latakia keeps the smoke from the Pirate Cake pleasantly cool. Just blown out through your nose you can feel some ethereal incense. In fact, dark “natural tones” dominate the smoke. In addition to the alkaline Latakia spice, the Burley can be tasted as earth and wood, while the Oriental is reminiscent of grass and moss. Natural sweetness is almost completely absent. Just like any form of playful composition. Here the Pirate Cake is uncompromising and yet varied within its spectrum. In the end you only need to clean some white, powdery ash and a little condensate.
Redolency:
The room note of the Pirate Cake is clearly characterized by the high content of oriental tobaccos. Consideration should therefore be given to society that is not used to this.
Conclusion:
The Pirate Cake is a dark brown cake-tobacco that already has a smoky and spicy scent. You need a little practice and a sharp knife before you can cut whole flakes from the tobacco block. Everything else is no problem. However, you should be familiar with strong English blends, otherwise the Pirate Cake, which is strong in both taste and nicotine content, can definitely handle it. Its spice is dark toned and comes primarily from Latakia and Oriental, rounded off by Burley. Grassy and earthy, alkaline and woody. - Anyone who appreciates strong English-style tobaccos should definitely try the Pirate Cake. It is the way you would imagine a tobacco that sailed with the buccaneers on the sea: Original in its style, unpretentious in taste and so strong that even a stiff breeze doesn't take away from its power.
