Haddo's Delight
Haddo's Delight is a robust blend characterized by a complex interplay of sweet, earthy, and spicy notes. The Virginias offer a natural sweetness, while the generous use of Perique provides a piquant depth. Unflavored Black Cavendish and White Burley lend body and strength to the blend. A hint of rum and plum rounds out the flavor profile, imparting a subtle fruitiness to the tobacco.
Characterisation:
Haddo's Delight comes packaged in the brand's signature small, round tin. Although the tin is hermetically sealed, the lid features a tear-off mechanism that can only be opened once; therefore, for long-term storage, it is safer not to rely on the included plastic overcap, but rather to transfer the tobacco to a different container. The strands are curly, cut to varying widths, and display a spectrum of brown shades ranging from light to dark. The aroma rising from the tin is reminiscent of dried fruit. Thanks to its low moisture content, Haddo's Delight can be packed into a pipe immediately after opening the tin.
Plugging:
The loose cut of Haddo's Delight allows for easy packing. By starting loosely at the bottom and gently increasing the pressure, you achieve a filling that ensures a good burn.
Light up:
The Haddo's Delight lights easily. Afterward, smooth the filling with the tamper and use a second flame to create an even glow across the surface.
Smoking properties:
Haddo's Delight is spicy, yet not overly robust in flavor. Alongside typical Virginia notes—such as hay and toasted bread—one also detects floral undertones. A fresh lightness permeates the smoking experience. At times, this calls to mind Oriental tobaccos, even though they are not actually part of the blend. The underlying sweetness, however, can be attributed to the flavoring used. Haddo's Delight burns remarkably well. Nevertheless, it may occasionally be necessary to relight the pipe or tamp the tobacco down. For a Virginia-based blend, however, this is to be expected; it does not create an excessive amount of work or prove overly distracting. The residual ash is fine and light, and presents no difficulties whatsoever during cleanup.
Redolency:
The character of the spicy Perique is not entirely overshadowed by the flavoring used; consequently—out of consideration for non-smokers—one should weigh whether to smoke Haddo's Delight in company.
Conclusion:
Haddo's Delight is a loose blend featuring various shades of brown that is both easy to prepare and a pleasure to smoke. Not overly strong, this tobacco offers a pleasant spiciness without being heavy; alongside the customary notes of hay and toast, it presents a sense of freshness and lightness, paired with a subtle, underlying sweetness. Neither the added flavoring nor the Perique vie for the spotlight here; instead, they allow ample room for the base tobaccos to shine. Thus, this blend is sure to appeal to anyone who appreciates natural tobaccos yet remains open to an aromatic mixture.
