Manufacturer Description:
A smooth aromatic tobacco created in memory of the pipemaker Rainer Barbi of Hamburg/Germany
Characterisation:
After opening the aluminum foil seal on the small, high tin, the Sundowner can be closed with the plastic lid. For longer storage, however, it is better to give the tobacco in an airtight container. There is less a flake in the tin than a coarse ready rubbed. The pieces are marbled in light, medium and dark brown. In between there are also blackish leafy bits and dark brown fibers. The scent is both smoky, reminiscent of Latakia, as well as of berries and sweet. The moisture content is optimal so that you can plug the Sundowner in the pipe straight away.
Plugging:
The different structures of the Sundowner require some attention when plugging. The size of the pipe should not be too small to allow room for the compressed tobacco to expand under the heat. If necessary, you can crush the flake pieces a little, but in any case you should not plug them too tight.
Light up:
The Sundowner stands up noticeably under the first flame. If you then carefully smooth the surface with the tamper and fire evenly again, you will get good embers.
Smoking properties:
The incense note of the Sundowner is intense. The Latakia used is very clear here in the lush smoke. The Virginias contribute aromas of toasted bread, while the Sundowner owes its spiciness to the Oriental. The tobacco is rounded off by a fine natural sweetness. It softens the stronger flavors and brings them together harmoniously. Despite careful preparation, it may be necessary to occasionally press the embers onto the tobacco with the tamper or to light the fire again. The light ash that remains, however, hardly requires much cleaning work.
Redolency:
The Sundowner can be clearly smelled in the room due to its Latakia content. You should therefore be considerate of non-smokers.
Conclusion:
The Sundowner, which comes in different shades of brown, is more of a ready-rubbed mixture than a flake. But it is without a doubt an English. With some experience in dealing with compressed tobaccos, the Sundowner shows typical aromas of this style. Ethereal incense notes combine with Virginia toasted bread notes and spicy oriental tobaccos. Smoky and at the same time naturally sweet, the Sundowner is one of the milder English tobaccos. So it is not only suitable for the eponymous sunset, but can also be smoked earlier in the day.
